The teddy bear was old, musty smelling, and frayed, but it meant the world to her at that very moment. She clutched it tightly in her arms, and smelled the dust collected over the months as it sat, lonely, on her shelf. She smiled at the memory of hating the disgusting, mustard-colored, bear, but only kept it there to keep him happy. She remembered when he had given it to her, when she was eight years old, at her birthday party. When they started going out, he discovered it, hidden in a box in the basement, and immediately took it out, a huge smile plastered on his face. It totally ruined the look of her room, sophisticated and clean. She hated everything about it, except the fact that he gave it to her. Why this unbearably disgusting bear made him so happy, she never knew…she never asked wondered…she never wondered…until then.
The bear gave a lopsided yarn-smile, its one glinting button eye stared at her from her arms with a look of pure yearning. The tears of those surrounding her quickly saddened her but she knew the memories of the times they spent together would never go away. She stared at the bear once more and wanted to scream at it, "Why are you smiling?" because nothing that was going on was happy. She felt a sudden rush of compassion for the stupid, little, teddy bear and her anger faded away. The bear, no matter how ugly or old, always gave her comfort when he couldn't- when he had left her for vacation or when she just simply missed him. It was the times that he was gone that made her realize how lucky she was to have the hideous bear, to have a friend that could help her out.
Now she didn't have him and she would soon be without the bear.
"It's time." The priest started on with his religious words of comfort, but she wasn't listening. She only heard mumbling and only saw the blurred impression of the coffin as it sat awkwardly on the ugly metal contraption that was about to lower it into the earth…forever. Soon, the priest was finished, and the loved ones stepped forward to privately say goodbye. When it was finally her turn, she said nothing but, "I love you."
…and did nothing but place the hideous bear in the coffin with her beloved fiancée.
