There was a blast of heat, Preston Burke watched his skin twinge as spiky fire sliced into his arms and glided down his torso.
The familiar shampoo, the same scent he'd smelled daily for years drifting out and tickling his nostrils. He tasted the comforting moisture dripping from the showerhead, letting the steam fog around him as he pushed his face under the steady stream of water, squinting his eyes tightly while the burn shimmied down and over his body.
Gasping slightly, he hit the knob to stop the flow, shaking his head rapidly as he slid open the door and stepped onto the tile floor.
The mirror was fogged over with condensation, he had to hold the towel covering his lower body tightly to his waist, using his left hand to wipe the glass clear. He examined himself carefully, wiping the droplets absentmindedly from his hands.
"Baby?"
He turned, hearing her voice from just outside the door. "Yeah."
She smiled when she saw him, her hair falling loosely over her face, the tank-top hugging her soft curves gently; she was ready for bed.
"You've been in her for awhile. I just wanted to make sure you were okay."
He allowed her a small smile, feeling his teeth curve into his bottom lip as she pushed a curl behind her ear and over her shoulder.
"I'm fine. I'll be in to bed soon."
She smiled, nodding slightly, turning away as she closed the door behind her. Preston licked his upper lip, releasing his grip on the towel and wiping himself dry. He reached for his boxers, before turning and catching his own eye in the mirror.
The sigh sounded odd to his ears, the exhaustion making him appear older than he really was. He leaned forward, closing his eyes, resting the tip of his head against the glass.
