Link had known Paya for going on several years now. They had never been especially close, but they had had several romantic moments. At the time, it was raining rather harshly. Link had just finished his hunt for shrines and began his return to Kakariko village for the night. He was presumably tired, with it being around 11:00 P.M. He knew that Impa would be furious at his late arrival, so he attempted to get home as quickly as possible. In doing so, he tripped in the mud several times, soiling his clothes. Around thirty minutes later, he finally arrived at Impa's house.

He did his absolute best to sneak into the house, but the rustic door creaked loudly several times. Impa heard the sound and immediately rushed to the door, scolding Link for his late arrival. She shouted at him, "Why were you out so late?" followed by more scoldings such as, "why are your clothes ruined?" Link felt utterly ashamed for staying out so late, but his curiosity in the shrines had distracted him from the current time. "Go upstairs and change your clothes immediately!" she shouted at him. Link abruptly complied, dashing upstairs.

When he entered the upstairs room, Paya had just woken up from the ruckus. "Hey Link, I heard what happened," she said, "my grandma is really weird about stuff like that". "It's fine, Paya," he said. Link began to undress atop the right twin bed when Paya noticed his various scars and smooth chest. Paya quickly became embarrassed, turning around, she walked back downstairs. After around 15 minutes, Link dressed and went after Paya. "Why did you leave so suddenly?", he said, "did I do something wrong?". "No Link. I just get embarrassed easily is all", she said. "Paya, come back upstairs, I think I need to show you something". Paya followed Link upstairs, where he stood in front of the right twin bed. "Lay down, Paya," Link said. She reluctantly obliged, laying down on her side, facing away from Link. Link proceeded to lay down directly behind of her, spooning her in the process. "M-master Link, what are you doing?" she said. "Just go to sleep, Paya," Link responded.
