Japor
"Do you have to go?" ten-year-old Leia Skywalker asked her father. He was about to leave on a long Jedi mission, and Leia did not want him to go.
Anakin Skywalker gazed into Leia's teary brown eyes. "Yeah, princess, I have to. I don't get to pick and choose my missions." Leia's lower lip quivered. Anakin crouched down to her level. "Hey, don't cry, princess. I'll come back." He swept her into an embrace.
"What if you don't make it?" Leia's voice was muffled since her face was against the fabric of Anakin's robe.
"Hey!" Anakin pushed his daughter away from his body by her shoulders. "Don't ever ask that again. I will come back to you," he said sternly, hands still on Leia's shoulders. Leia nodded, then leaned against Anakin's broad chest again. Anakin wrapped his arms tightly around her.
"Are you sure?" Leia asked, still uncertain.
"Of course I'm sure!" Anakin said indignantly. "Hey, hold out your hand." Anakin reached into the pocket of his robe and pulled out a bracelet. "I made this for you. So you'd remember me. I carved it out of a japor snippet. It'll bring you good fortune." he told Leia, saying the exact words his nine-year-old-self had said to Padme all those years ago. He placed it into Leia's palm and closed her fingers over it. He smiled when Leia said the same thing a fourteen-year-old Padme had said.
"It's beautiful, but I don't need this to remember you by." Leia slipped the bracelet over her hand and onto her wrist. "I'll wear it every day."
"I'm sure you will." Anakin hugged her one last time then walked out the door.
...
Anakin opened the door to the apartment and limped inside. Leia bolted to the door.
"Daddy!" she moved to hug him but Anakin held up a hand.
"Careful, princess. Daddy's a little sore."
Leia looked at her father up and down. He sported a black eye, a large scratch on his forehead, what appeared to be a broken nose, a split lip and his left arm was in a sling. He was holding his side too, so Leia guessed broken ribs. "What happened to you?"
"Let's just say I didn't get out of the way in time when a thermal detonator was thrown my way." he said, grimacing. It obviously hurt for him to talk.
"Are you okay?" Leia asked, concerned.
"Yeah. I just need to sit down."
"Dad, I wore it every day!" Leia said proudly, holding up her wrist that bore the japor bracelet.
"Good for you, princess. Good for you."
