The process of metamorphosis, changing from one form of being into another, is not easy nor painless for a caterpillar.

The process can be strange and unexpected. After all, what motivates something that was perfectly content with its existence as it was, suddenly decide to go through the tedious procedure of becoming something else.

He can't say who or what specifically sewed the threads of his chrysalis together. Was it that first unexpected painful and rousing bite Rize gave him? Nishiki's willingness to die for his human lover? Ryouko's sacrifice for her daughter at the hands of human beings who thought that by their own nature their lives were ordained higher than any ghoul's?

Perhaps it went back even farther, a woman who by her own unselfishness worked herself to death for a sister who couldn't care less, despite having a son that needed her.

In the end it mattered not the maker behind the masterpiece. For the cocoon that cradled the caterpillar's soul had finally been shattered, and where once stood Ken Kaneki, a new creature emerged.

The butterfly stood in all of its glory. Crimson wings the texture and color of blood flapping proudly. The process was complete.

The brand new butterfly is hungry. It eyes its prey gleefully, for you see, baby butterflies are cannibals.
