Intro

Their groans were close. I could hear them approach with every step and my breath had never sounded so loud. I couldn't slow it down. It was quickening with every second that draw nearer. I saw the light from the door flood the room and the silhouettes were outlined from under my dishevelled brown hair falling before my frightened blue eyes. I held a pair of scissors to my chest, hiding in the corner of a storage room at work. I slunk down to my feet. "Hazel?" I heard a voice call. A voice? Wait. "Hello!?" I cried out. I didn't mean to shout, but my adrenaline was pumping. I peer around the boxes I managed to scuffle behind. "Who's there?" I croaked, swallowing my fear and standing to my feet. "It's me, Alex," he reassured. My face light up with a grin, I stepped forward approaching my co-worker who I had last seen running in the opposite direction. Before my foot was secure on the ground, the instant sound of groaning and banging as the dead filled the room. How was I so oblivious to not hear them before? I was so wrapped up in being safe that I let my guard down. A half-faced man with a shredded business suit lunged at Alex. I didn't notice it was my boss before he wrapped his hands around Alex's head and sunk his teeth into his shoulder. As I stood frozen watching Alex's body fall to the ground, along with a pack of brain eaters I closed my eyes. Before my ending doom, I wanted to make one prayer.

"Dear God, Please make sure Hailey is safe, and-" Before I could finish, I felt the weight of someone pushing me over. I fell with their weight on top of me and hit the floor feeling a tearing sensation in my arms. As more and more brain eaters fed off me, I had hoped my daughter was safe being at school.
