"Like a Hero Going Home"
Darkness. Darkness covered him like a blanket does a sleeping child. He was so cold and the air was thick with the feeling of the nothingness that surrounded him. He found it hard to move, but he also saw no reason to considering there was nothing but blackness that surrounded him. He suddenly remembered and thought of her. Was she alright? She needed him and he felt terrible for leaving her, but at least now she was free. He had always thought dying would be blissful, like ending up in paradise – not this eternal damnation in oblivion.
He didn't know how much time had passed before he heard her. Her beautiful voice that sounded out like one hundred angels sighing. She was sobbing and it pained him because he could do nothing to ebb her sadness. She began to sing. It was a futile attempt without her power, but it was such a beautiful sound. Then he saw it - small at first, but then it grew. It was a beautiful, bright sun reaching out its flaming tendrils towards him. He could not resist the warmth that emanated from the great ball of fire; it gave him hope. He began to walk toward the beacon, slowly and awkwardly. His limbs felt as though they had not moved for years and his bones creaked in agony with every slight movement. The tendrils reached out and wrapped themselves around him tightly. Without warning, they yanked him quickly towards the light and his body screamed from the pain that shot through him. He could feel the light pierce through every fiber of his being and then... Nothing.
No pain, no fear, no nothingness. He felt the small frame of a woman draped over his chest. His eyes fluttered open and saw her.
"Rapunzel?" He gazed at her as if he couldn't believe his eyes.
"Eugene?" She gasped.
"Did I ever tell you I've got a thing for brunettes?"
She cried out his name and kissed him. He embraced her and returned the favor. She saved him from that nothingness and reunited him with the woman he deeply cared for, and for that he was truly grateful.
