"Man. Sometimes I forget what a powerful bender that kid is." Sokka said.
Katara stopped. "Wait. What did you just say?"
"Nothing!" Sokka insisted. "Just that Aang is one powerful bender."
The man you are going to marry… I can see that he is a very powerful bender.
Aunt Wu's words echoed within Katara. She looked at Aang, standing in front of the volcanic eruption, looking more strong and powerful than she had ever seen him before.
"I suppose you're right."
Before then , she had never once considered the possibility that Aang might be the one she married. Yet it seemed so clear now. She smiled to herself, imagining a future with the Avatar. Of course, Aunt Wu had been wrong before. And she was much too young to be thinking about marriage, let alone who it would be with. Yet she couldn't help but smile, feeling hopeful that it would be Aang. She could imagine a future with him. Sure, he was just a silly little kid now. But she knew he would grow up to be one of the most powerful, courageous Avatars that ever lived. But did Aang really feel the same way about her? Katara assured herself that he did. Why else was he acting so strange around her? Something Aunt Wu told Aang must have led him to her. Aang came down from the platform of rock he was standing on.
"I'm glad the village wasn't destroyed." Aang breathed, looking to the ground.
"Yeah. Me too." Sokka said.
Katara didn't say anything. She was still staring at Aang. He looked up at her.
"Katara? What is it?"
"Oh, nothing…"
Suddenly, Katara opened her eyes to a dark room. She felt a body turn over next to her and place a limp arm around her. She breathed out, snuggling into her husband.
"It was a dream." Katara thought out loud, smiling to herself.
"What was a dream?" Aang said lazily.
"Oh, nothing, Sweetie. I just had a dream about meeting Aunt Wu in that village." She laughed, shaking her head.
"Wow. That must have been…20 years ago."
"Oh, stop it. You're making me feel old." She turned to face Aang.
"What was this dream about?" Aang hiked himself up on his elbow to look back at her.
"It was weird, because it was just a memory. It wasn't any different from what happened, it just kind of...played back in my head."
"Oh really. Was it when she told you you were going to marry a powerful bender?"
"What?" Katara snapped up. "How did you know about that?"
Aang's mouth twitched into a wide grin. "I eavesdropped on your first reading with Aunt Wu."
"What? Why?"
"Because I wanted to see what she said about your love life."
Katara began smiling in spite of herself. "You did not."
"Yes. I did. And then I went to Sokka to ask him for love advice." Aang said matter-of-factly.
Katara cackled wildly. "And what did the All-Knowing Love Doctor say?"
"He told me to act 'aloof' or something. So I did. And you ignored me."
"Dang. I was mean."
"No. I was an idiot. I was convinced you didn't love me. When you did, only you didn't realize it yet." Aang's mouth spread into a goofy smile.
"I wish I had realized it sooner…We could have had much more time together."
"What, when we were 12? What were we going to do, hold hands and kiss on the cheek? We weren't even dating and we already did that. I'm thankful for all the time I've had with you, Sweetie." Aang took Katara into his arms and kissed her head. Katara pressed her nose into his chest, inhaling his pleasant aroma.
"Me too." She whispered, smiling.
