Castle leaned over her, not quite believing what had just happened. "Beckett's down!" He heard muffled shouts, but they were all white noise. He was more concerned with what lay before him. "No no no, Kate…" Her eyes were wide and terrified as she moved her bloodstained glove off her chest.

"Shh…Kate, please," he begged, watching his world slowly fade away, unable to stop it. "Stay with me, Kate," he pleaded, "Stay with me. Don't leave me. Please." She gasped for air, and he wished with everything he had that he could give her his own breath, if only she would live.

"Stay with me, okay?" He gazed at her face and saw the teardrops sliding from the corners of her eyes. He fought hard to stay strong for her, but he was breaking. "Kate…"

"I love you." The words slipped out, but he just couldn't hold them in any longer. She had to know, as if somehow she would fight harder to live if she knew. "I love you, Kate," he repeated, trying to make her understand the depth of his emotion.
He saw the corners of her mouth slightly tilt to form the vaguest smile, and he thought she might make a comeback. However, his hopes were crushed as her eyes lost focus, glazed over and closed. He held her as her body went limp, not comprehending that his best friend and love was no longer breathing, probably not even alive.
