Disclaimer: I don't own the Rurouni Kenshin characters, just borrowing them for this short story.
First time writing a story or composition of any sort in 15 years, please be kind. :) hope you enjoy this one-shot story.
It has been five years since Kenshin moved into the Kamiya dojo. As was his habit, he frequently reflected on the past and most of his reflections mainly consisted of memories with someone. Kaoru.
The beautiful spring weather made him remember all those simple days they had spent together sitting on the pouch sipping tea and admiring the sakura trees talking about nothing in particular. He would admire her from the corner of his eyes, the sakuras had nothing on her.
The hot and rainy summer days reminded him of the time they got caught in the rain while walking to the next town for Kaoru to give lessons at another dojo and they had to seek shelter in a leaky pavilion, to avoid the rain they were standing so close together he could smell the jasmine scent that she always used. The desire to kiss her was great but of course he did not being a proper and circumspect gentleman.
The chilly autumn air evoke the memory of the group of them, Yahiko, Dr Gensai, Ayame, Suzume, Kaoru and himself, were walking along the banks of the river lined with trees of orange and gold leafs in the evening and the fireflies just start to appear. Ayame and Suzume was with them and insisted on catching them to put into jars and took off chasing after the bugs. Just as Yahiko and Kaoru were about to chase after the girls, Kenshin reached out and pulled Kaoru's hands to hold her back. Kaoru was astonished of course, but Kenshin had explained that Yahiko would be fine looking after the two girls and that it wouldn't be convenient if Kaoru were to run in her kimono. All that while holding on to her hand… you could imagine the blush on Kaoru's face.
On the cold winter nights, Kenshin's mind would turn to the time when Kaoru was late in returning home after giving kendo lessons in the neighbouring town. It was snowing quite heavily and Kenshin was getting worried that something had happened to her on the way home and went out to find her. After a while of searching he found her under a shelter waiting for the snow to let up. He rushed up to her and embraced her tightly in his arms.
"Kenshin…?"
"Kaoru-dono! I have been looking everywhere for you! Thank goodness you're alright."
Returning his hug, "Sorry, I've made you worry."
"It's alright, let us go home now."
Hand in hand they walked home together. Finally, their quiet feelings towards each other has come to blossom.
