Stares
Remus was staring again. He could feel it.Sirius suppressed the grin threatening to ruin his façade of peaceful sleep as a soft sigh from the couch sounded. Sirius patted himself on the back for curling up in the arm chair by the fire, thus enabling maximum viewing pleasure of the couch as he cracked his eyes open the tiniest bit and stared at Remus stretching and yawning, book opened on his stomach.

"Just going to rest our eyes, Lupin, don't fall asleep now," the auburn haired boy muttered out loud to himself. Secure in the knowledge that Remus was not staring again, rather his eyes were crunched shut rather tight in mid yawn, Sirius let the corners of his mouth curve upwards in amusement. Remus tossed one arm over his eyes and rested a hand on the spine of the book.

It took ten minutes for his breathing to even out.

Sirius smirked and opened his eyes completely and watched Remus quietly for a while. The dancing flames cast an interesting play of shadows on the boy's body. His hair was mused and sticking up where his arm disrupted it from its attempt at a graceful fall on to his forehead. His grip on the book just barely tightened and loosened as his chest rose and fell.

He was gorgeous. Completely and totally gorgeous. Sirius smiled fondly.

"You're staring again," came the low and soft voice. Sirius nearly fell out of his chair. He coughed and stared at Remus who hadn't moved. Silence filled the common room once more and Sirius wondered if he had imagined it. If his subconscious was having him on. If he was really that tired.

"Well? If you're not going to stop, you could at least tell me how the view is," Remus said, moving his arm and staring at Sirius calmly. Sirius' mouth opened and shut in a fair imitation of a fish.

"Magnificent," he managed finally. Remus snorted.

"I'd invest in a mirror, but alas, I can think of more suitable investments, so I'll take your word for it." Silence fell on them once more for several moments as they stared at each other, neither one moving save for the rise and fall of their chests.

"Is there any particular reason you were staring?" Remus finally asked. Sirius stared at him.

"Was here any particular reason you were staring earlier?" he asked. Remus hesitated and frowned.

"I was trying to make sure you were asleep."

"And I, the same," Sirius replied.

Silence again, before…

"Really?" Sirius shrugged.

"You?" It was Remus' turn to shrug as silence once more reigned.

"Well, I suppose we should get off to bed then," Remus stated. Sirius hummed in agreement, but neither one of them moved. They stayed there, staring, for quite sometime in fact.

"Remus," Sirius stated suddenly, breaking the silence, "I—"

"And I you," Remus interrupted suddenly. Sirius stared, taken aback. Remus stared back at him intently, visibly relaxing as Sirius broke into a sudden smile. The dark haired boy started to say something before being interrupted by a yawn. Remus grinned.

"To bed Padfoot, we'll talk in the morning," he stated, picking the book up off his abdomen, dog earring the page, and setting it down as he pushed himself up. Sirius nodded and scrambled up on his feet. They gathered their things and headed up to the dormitory side by side, hands brushing occasionally until they finally grasped them together.

"You know," remarked Remus, "It's awfully impolite to stare at some one while pretending to be asleep, Padfoot."

"You know, it's awfully impolite to stare at any one at all, no matter how irresistible they might be," Sirius retorted. Remus grinned.

"I know."
