Author's Note: Huzzah! A Cap fic where Cap is actually the main character. Interesting.
"Sharon, they don't sell unicorn donuts. Yes, I'm sure...sweetheart, please don't run away to find unicorns that make donuts."
Steve has only been in this job for two days, but if customers this cute come in on a daily basis, he's going to have to quit.
"Uh, Buck, who's that girl at the back of line?" Steve asks, alternating his vision between the machine in front of him and the unimpressed looking man with an eyepatch waiting to his left.
"Oh, her? That's Peggy. She's a regular."
Oh God.
"R-regular?" Steve chokes. Mr. Fury growls. Steve lowers his head and gets back to making the cappuccino.
"Yeah, she comes in every week to get donuts for her niece."
That's it. I'm handing in my apron later. I can't take this.
"Rogers. You gonna hand me that drink or do I have to pry out of your cold dead hands?"
Steve chokes and gives Mr. Fury the cup with shaking hands.
"That's four seconds shorter than the first time. Good job."
Steve breathes a heavy sigh of relief.
"What's his deal?" Bucky asks, dropping two strawberry donuts into a bag.
"Oh, Mr. Fury? Uh, he's my boss."
"...I thought Mr. Erskine was our boss...?"
"No, Mr. Fury wants to hire me after I'm done with night school."
"...Why?"
"I don't know."
Bucky looks at Steve quizzically before finally passing the bag to the customer in front of him.
"Thanks, Bucky! Come on, Cassie!"
Oh no.
Peggy, the cute one, is right there. First in line.
"Um, hi," Steve chokes out.
"Hello, there. I don't think I've seen you before," Peggy says. Peggy has a voice that is both melodic and firm. He likes it.
"I, uh, I'm new here. Can," Steve clears his throat, feeling very self-conscious suddenly, "Can I take your, um, order?"
"Well, everyone knows it's not my order, it's Sharon's. She likes sprinkles, with chocolate frosting."
Steve nods and blinks a few times, having to be nudged by Bucky to actually acquire the treats.
"Oh, yeah, yeah, right."
Bucky rolls his eyes and starts asking Peggy about her niece.
Steve returns with shaking hands again and as he passes the bag to Peggy, he wheezes out, "I included two extra donuts. A regular jelly and a heart-shaped jelly."
"Why, thank you. I'm sure Sharon will love it." Peggy smiles as she leaves the shop and Steve thinks he could live with seeing her once a week.
If not more.
