Hermosa

[A/N] This is based off the prompt word "Hermosa" on The Assimilation Trials forum, left by Kyoko Rose. Set after Francis's death while Mary is just beginning to see Don Carlos.

Mary hadn't been listening to anything Don Carlos was saying, really - he seemed to be a kind man, but he held no real interest for her other than what he could do for her country. Her heart wasn't in it. Francis had died only weeks ago, and already she was forced to entertain other marriage proposals - such was the life of a queen.

She glanced up when she heard the word "hermosa," her curiosity piquing. He was still speaking, but she interrupted him without thinking.

"What does that mean?" she asked, forcing a smile for his benefit.

Don Carlos didn't seem annoyed that she had interrupted him. Rather, he smiled back in response. "It means that you are most beautiful, Queen Mary."

"Oh!" she said. "Vous ĂȘtes gentil de le dire, votre seigneurie." Her lips trembled slightly. She didn't want to flirt back, but she would do what she must to keep his interest.

He lifted a brow, waiting for her explanation on what it meant.

"I told you that it is a very sweet thing to say, my lord."

She didn't want to marry him - she did not love him, but her country needed him and he was so kind.

Perhaps she could endure it. She hoped so.
