A/N: This is just a little scene I had playing in my head when I was listening to the song that will be mentioned. I needed to get some of the clutter out of my head so I could finish my other two stories, so now that this is out, hopefully I can get cracking on those without too many episodes of writer's block!
oooooo
Soft music floated through the apartment door. If one were to stop and listen, they would recognize the song as 'Love Is A Many-Splendored Thing', by Frank Sinatra. In the room beyond the door, they would see an open and three-fourths empty box of pizza, with a bottle of bordeaux and two near-empty wine glasses beside it. These items were on the floor, seeing as the residents of this particular apartment could not afford necessities such as tables.
A foot away was a simple mattress, no bed frame to be seen, with rumpled sheets and lopsided pillows. And not much farther from that was the one piece of entertainment the residents could afford: an old-fashoned record player. This is where the soft music had been coming from the entire time. In the middle of the small, one room apartment, one would witness the residents themselves, dancing to the music.
Neal hummed quietly as he and Kate swayed to their favorite song; gazing at each other with the love in their hears reflecting in their eyes. They then finished the dance with a kiss when the song was over. Neal wished the moment would last forever, that the world really would stand still, and they could stay like this - embracing, kissing - until the very end of time. But the inevitable happened, and the moment was gone in a flash.
Back in June's apartment, Neal stirred slightly, feeling himself leave the dream of his past despite his best efforts. He sighed and stretched out his arm to the other part of the bed, only to feel the cold emptiness next to him. Reaching over, he grabbed a pillow and pulled it toward him, burring his face in it as he tried to fall asleep again. If Neal focused hard enough, he could still smell the perfume Kate used to wear...
Neal smiled peacefully as he drifted off again, thinking he could feel her fingers running through his hair, her sweet voice whispering in his ear, and the brush of her lips against his. And that was all it took for Neal to know that Kate was - and always would be - there with him.
