Hola guys! This is a Huddy oneshot, cause Huddy rocks Hameron to infinity. It's short...again, but I hope you like it!
Disclaimer: I do not own House, no matter how ever much I wish it to be.
The Way
They were together again. Cameron felt her hands tighten on the file she was holding. She still didn't know why she reacted this way. She was with Chase now. Period. Done. End of story. And yet…
No one else noticed it this much, or if they did, they didn't care. But to someone who paid as much attention to House's daily patterns of life as she did, it was glaringly obvious. The way he came up right behind her to murmur in her ear. The way he got her to laugh. The way she got him to at least crack a smirk. The way his gaze lingered on her when he thought no one was looking. The way his eyes softened when he talked about her, even if he thought no one could tell.
She waved him towards her, bidding him to enter into her personal space. Her hand landed softly on his back and she guided him onward. He made no complaint.
They were walking now, moving together like a synchronized dance, she walking just slow enough to seem natural and not make him exert much effort in order to keep up.
That never happened when she had walked with House. She had always walked ahead of him backwards, with House following her at a decent pace. She had had to constantly coach herself to walk slower. Sometimes she walked so slowly she lagged behind. And somehow, she thought, he had always noticed.
"Dr. Cuddy!" Someone called her name from down the hall. Cameron watched as both doctors turned simultaneously, House waiting patiently while Cuddy signed something. He never waited for Cameron. In fact, sometimes she thought she saw relief when she was called away from him. He bopped Cuddy in the back of the legs with his cane to get her to hurry and she gave him a friendly push. Just enough to make him stumble. Not enough to make him fall. She would never let him fall.
The atmosphere between them was one Cameron longed for. She often wished House was comfortable enough with her like he was Cuddy so he would tease her mercilessly. He teased his boss with the full knowledge of his boundaries. If he ever went too far, he would back off immediately, perhaps even apologize. It was strange. People didn't often wish to be teased.
They reached her office. He opened the door and she slipped under without skipping a beat. It was so unlike the awkward dance that happened when she and House attempted the same thing. Cameron had had to learn that you never held the door for House. Ever.
They vanished into the office and Cameron's hands released the now crumpled file. She sighed and smoothed it out. She knew it. It was just hard to face sometimes.
He would never love Cameron the way he loved her.
