Okay so I'm completely new and I've never really written anything like this in my life but I wrote this for a friend and she told me to post it! Here goes nothing.
Phil stared at the clock hung upon the chillingly empty wall of the airport. As the hands crept their way towards the eleven o'clock mark, the boy's leg began to shake uncontrollably. His friend's plane should be landing now.
Friend. This word had played over and over in Phil's mind for the past year. Could they ever go back to the way they were before? That unique bond of profound friendship that had once kept them both alive? It was so long ago now, seemed so distant. Perhaps it would be awkward when they were finally reunited; a stuttering exchange of formalities and a clumsy hand shake. Phil could think of nothing worse.
The minutes continued to tick by as Phil stared at the worn out knees of his jeans, still trembling with a sickly mix of anticipation and uncertainty. Maybe he could just leave now; just get up and walk straight out of the building and never look back. It would be so much easier than trying to rekindle a relationship that may be destined to mean nothing more than that of an acquaintance. As Phil's glazed blue eyes studied the exit sign he slowly started to stand.
It would be so easy.
Just as he took the first step to leave, he was stopped by the crash of double doors opening behind him, followed by the chatter of a sea of people. He scanned the crowd yet there seemed to be no sight of his companion. That is until, the large group slowly disbanded, leaving a young man standing in stunned silence with his battered black suitcase resting on the ground next to his calf. Phil recognised Dan immediately. Dan's hand clasped his mouth while the other attempted a slow, shaky wave. He removed his hand from his mouth to reveal an attempted smile while glassy brown eyes – fixed upon Phil's - rained lightly upon his cheeks.
Without a second of thought, Phil was making his way to his friend wounded by emotion. The boys spoke no words but – with outstretched arms – beckoned each other into the tight embrace they had waited all too long to feel. At last, Phil felt finally happy, finally content...finally whole.
