Xena glanced at the sleeping bard. I can't believe I'm doing this, she thought. She unrolled the scroll and began to write.
I love you, my dear bard, but I cannot keep doing this to you. I can't keep risking your life. You're where you need to be right now, safe in Potadeia, with your family. I hate hurting them, too. I hate the looks your father gives me, I hate the way your mother looks at me, and Lila seems to be the only one who doesn't hate me. If it hadn't been for me, Perdicas wouldn't have died, you wouldn't have had to deal with Hope, Gods, Gabrielle, I hate leaving you, but I wouldn't have been able to handle seeing you hurt one more time. The young man your parents have picked out seems to love you already. I know you'll be happier.
Xena
Xena laid the scroll down by the sleeping bard and walked out of the room, tears in her eyes.
Gabrielle awoke the next morning and noticed the scroll beside her. She cried as she read the words that Xena had so carefully penned the night before.
"Gabrielle, what is wrong?" Lila asked anxiously as she entered the room.
"It's Xena. She left me," Gabrielle said through her tears. "I told Xena that I didn't want to marry Lynceus! Why didn't she believe me?"
"Oh, Gabrielle," Lila said as she swept her sister into a hug. "Go to her Gabrielle. She wants you to be happy, and you will be happiest if you are with her. She loves you, and you love her. I know what you two are about, even if you don't."
"What do you mean, what we're about?" Gabrielle asked.
"Oh, Gabrielle, it's only obvious. If you ever do get married, it'll be to her. She's who you love. I mean, when you look at her, your eyes light up, as do hers. I know how she feels. It's the same way when I look at any guy I'm interested in," Lila explained gently.
"Thank you, Lila," Gabrielle said, smiling for the first time that morning.
"Glad to help," Lila said.
Gabrielle ran outside to the horse barn where Xena usually kept Argo whenever they went to Potadeia. Amazingly enough, Xena was still there.
"Xena, I love you," the bard said, before Xena could even have a chance to speak. "You know that I don't want to marry Lynceus! Why did you think that you knew what was best for me? I love you Xena!" Gabrielle exclaimed as Xena's jaw dropped.
"I love you Gabrielle," Xena said. Xena took Gabrielle's hands in hers and drew her close and hugged her. Gabrielle looked up at Xena. Xena looked back at her and took the bard's lips with her own.
