Kaidan wasn't a religious man, but sitting there, waist deep in cool flowing water, back resting against an armed nuclear bomb, gunshot wound in his side, he began to wonder what would come next. Would he meet God? Would he wake up in a different time as a different species? Was this it for the conscious body called Kaidan Alenko? Perhaps he should have thought about this more in the earlier, more peaceful times of his life.

It might have been the perfect place to die. Blue skies with the warm sun on his face. White sandy beaches still fresh in his mind from the assault that brought him to this precarious situation. It was almost picturesque, if not for the blaring alarm sounding throughout the complex.

Never mind the Geth closing in on him. He had done his duty, and damn if he wasn't going to enjoy his final moments. He let his eyes slide shut, satisfied he had done what needed to be done to ensure his crew made it out. He heard the roar of engines and grinding of metal. Probably another Geth drop ship. He felt strong hangs roughly grip his limbs and throw him. The Geth must have finally approached him. He heard the sounds of the alarms grow fainter and slowly replaced by the panicked sounds of human voices. That wasn't right.

Through a force of will born of human curiosity that even the face of death couldn't stifle, Kaidan lifted open his eyes just enough to see that not only was he no longer in that Krogan breeding facility, he was in the back of a small shuttle. Either heaven was more industrialized than the faiths of the Earth had let on or he was being saved. Unable to keep his eyes open he strained his ears to listen. Definitely stressed individuals flying this shuttle, definitely arguing about whether or not they were going fast enough.

Then he heard what he had prepared himself for, though much more distantly than he had planned. The nuke detonated, followed shortly by a shockwave that rocked the shuttle. Alarms blazed and Kaidan couldn't hold on anymore. He let himself slip into sleep, filled with a mild hope he might actually wake up again.
