Valentine's Day Surprise

Barbara Gordon sighed as she looked out the window on this dreary day. It was pouring rain and she was stuck inside. Some Valentine's Day this was turning out to be.

She didn't need a secret admirer anyway. Okay, maybe she did. If she wasn't so lonely, she wouldn't want a valentine so bad.

Barbara remembered Dick Grayson, her first crush. They had had some laughs together when they were younger. Now he was dating that alien Starfire or whatever her name was.

Starfire didn't know anything about Dick. She didn't know him as long as Barbara had. She hadn't been there to comfort him when he missed his parents or to pull some sort of prank on Bruce.

No, Barbara shook her head. Starfire didn't know him at all. But why wouldn't Dick like Starfire better? A tall beautiful girl who at least still had the use of her legs.

Barbara scolded herself. She had promised she would stop feeling sorry for herself. She was going to go make herself some chocolate chip cookies, when she heard a knock at the door.

Who would be out in this weather? She rolled over to the door and opened it to reveal a soaked, smiling Dick Grayson. "Dick!" She quickly opened the door wider. "Come in before you catch a cold in that rain."

He grinned. "I think I might take you up on that." He walked in and shut the door behind him.

Barbara wheeled into the living room. "I was just about to make some cookies."

Dick didn't reply; he just shifted nervously.

"So what are you doing here?" She asked him curiously.

Dick shrugged. "What a guy can't visit his best friend?"

Barbara smiled at him. "Of course you can. You know you're always welcome here."

She peered behind him. "Where's Starfire?" She asked.

Dick rubbed the back of his neck. "Oh, about that, I uh broke up with her."

Barbara's eyes widened in surprise. "Why?" She questioned curiously.

Dick laughed. "Why do you think?"

Barbara gave him a blank look. "I'm not sure what you mean."

Dick walked over and sat down on the couch. "Come here." He motioned with his hand for her to come where he was.

She wheeled over to him so she was directly in front of the couch where he was sitting and waited for him to continue.

Dick scooted forward and took her hands in his. He looked her in the eyes. "I broke up with her because of you, Babs."

Barbara pulled her hands away. "Because of me? Why?"

"Why?" Dick echoed. "Because. I love you."

Barbara froze. Did she hear that right?

As if he was reading her thoughts, Dick laughed. "Yes, you heard that right. I love you, Babs."

Barbara stared at him. "You do? But I thought you loved Starfire."

Dick sighed. "I could never love Starfire like I love you. Here. I brought you something." He reached behind him and produced a heart shaped box of chocolates.

Barbara smiled. "Thank you." She looked up and his face was right in front of hers. Without thinking, she pressed her lips to his. He wrapped his arms around her pulling her closer.

After they broke apart, they smiled at each other. "I love you too, Dick." Barbara said quietly.

He grinned and kissed her again. "So I believe you said something about cookies?"
