At the end of another long day at East High School, drama student and fashion victim Ryan Evans walked along a corridor towards his locker. He had reluctantly agreed to help his sister with the choreography of her next audition piece, but was now glad for a break from her seemingly-endless gyration.
He inputted the combination and pulled open the metal door, not noticing the small piece of paper fall from the safe-like container. He removed his hat and tossed it into the receptacle, where it joined more items of headgear. As he went to shut the door to his locker, he finally noticed the scrap of paper that had landed on his shoe.
Kneeling down he picked up the piece and stared at it, a look of bewilderment on his face. It seemed to be a long line of numbers, and maths had never been Ryan's strong point. He stared again intently at it, reciting the numbers aloud.
"6338 63 46 843 562537 7666. 5683 3766 9687 732738 2364737, 843 663, 843 6659, 743 626694687. 36 668 8253 866 5664, 8769 999."
Utterly confused, he slipped the scrap of paper into his pocket and returned to the drama studio. He was momentarily shocked by the fact that his sister wasn't on-stage, but soon realised she was sitting in the front row of the stalls.
There was a grin on Sharpay's face, as she appeared to be talking to herself. Her fingers tapped at a tremendous speed as she spoke in a broken, staccato voice.
"Sure… After… School… We'… meet… up… See… you… then… babe… Hugs… and… Kisses… Toodles… Sharpay!"
She stopped talking; staring at the cell phone in her hand, before waving her arm in the air frantically. After a moment, she lowered her limb and looked once more at the small LCD screen. "And…" she stretched the small word out, lengthening the vowel. "…sent!"
She heard her brother approach and flashed him a smile, which soon faded as she studied his puzzled look. "I was texting Gabby… sorry…"
His brow furrowed as he concentrated intently on the cell phone in his sister's hand, before he pulled the sheet of paper from his pocket.
6338 63 46 843 562537 7666. 5683 3766 9687 732738 2364737, 843 663, 843 6659, 743 626694687. 36 668 8253 866 5664, 8769 999.
Sharpay handed him the device and watched as he scutinised it. He attempted to dial the number, but hung up when it turned out to be the number of a Pizza Delivery service. He paused once more, lost in thought, until the pink gadget bleeped in his hand.
"That's probably Gab—" Sharpay trailed off, watching her brother as he opened a new text message. Ryan set the options to Predictive Text, and glanced once more at the paper. Slowly, his fingers shaking slightly as he did so, he entered the numerical code into the text message.
He had been right. The encoded message filled the small screen, and Ryan's eyes sparkled with joy. He deleted the code and tossed the cell phone back to his sister, before casually walking back through the large auditorium doors, entering into the corridor beyond.
The message had told him where to go, and who he'd meet there. Yet, his heart still did an unexpected somersault at the sight of his waiting admirer. He bit his lip in excitement as he threw his arms around his crush, sending the box of chocolates and bunch of roses toppling to the floor. Ryan didn't need anything but his secret admirer, for he was happier now than ever.
The end.
Right then, who was Ryan meeting, and where did they meet?
Happy St. Valentine's Day,Joey x
