A/N: Originally called "A Smile is Only a Gesture" I've decided to revamp this story that I wrote 6 years ago for this years NaNoWriMo. I hope that you guys enjoy it! Its different from the original premise so some of the old reviews might not make sense. But onwards, and upwards. Enjoy, love Dani.
Sabrina woke up with a start—beads of sweat gathering on her neck. Feeling around the bed for Daphne, the older Grimm sighed, remembering that her younger sister had gone to Snow's house for the weekend. She had been invited, but declined, not sure that she would be too enthusiastic to participate in Daphne's slumber party rituals. She wondered the time and glanced at the clock resting on her nightstand. The blue numbers read 4:57 and she fell back on her bed. She'd give herself just two more hours to sleep, hoping that she'd wake up before her mischievous roommate decided that a Saturday morning was the perfect time for a prank. Luckily Relda, Mr. Canis, and Uncle Jake were out all weekend on a stakeout, so Sabrina could fight dirty in her attempts to thwart the pranks.
Three hours later, Sabrina Grimm was definitely in a happy mood. After noting that the smell of a strange breakfast wasn't wafting up to her room, and that she had the same color hair that she went to sleep with, she rose from the bed and started brushing her hair.
Exactly 100 brushes later, Sabrina's blonde hair was practically shimmering as she cautiously stepped into the hallway. Clad in an oversized T-shirt and some cotton shorts, she held her breath as she toed into the bathroom across the hall. After brushing her teeth and washing her face, Sabrina walked downstairs and was pleased when she noticed that she had the kitchen to herself.
She decided to take advantage of the peace and started to make breakfast before the self proclaimed Trickster King could ruin her morning. She pulled down the bread from atop the fridge, took out the eggs, butter and juice and closed the fridge door. She couldn't contain a loud yelp when she saw a fairy where the door had just been.
"Hey Pugface, watcha doing?" Puck asked. She had been caught off guard and struggled to come up with a good comeback. His dirty blond hair flopped over his piercing green eyes that bore into hers. "What's the matter Grimm, cat's got your tongue?"
Sabrina glowered at him as his face twisted into a cocky grin. She turned away from him and put her ingredients at the table, her face heating up at his close proximity. Angry that her body reacted to his presence, she spun around and retorted, "Listen here, Rhino Dung, unless you are planning to get your lazy butt to cook yourself some breakfast, you're gonna shut up and sit down" She put a little more force than she needed to but was glad to see that Puck's face had stopped smiling. As he grumbled and wandered over to the dining room table, she finished making some toast and turned to the stove to get started on some eggs.
She reluctantly turned back to the fridge and pulled out four more eggs for Puck, and figured that having a full Puck would be easier to handle than a hungry, whiny Puck. As the oil was starting to heat up, she stood on her tip toes and tried to pull down two glasses. She tensed up as she felt a warm body come up behind her. Puck easily reached over her and took down the two glasses and handed them to her. She looked at him curiously as he shot her a smirk. "Thanks?" she replied hesitantly, and put the two glasses down on the countertop.
She cracked the eggs into a bowl and whisked them, the smell of a normal breakfast starting to settle in the kitchen. She heard the sound of the freezer opening and she frowned when she saw Puck taking out the box of frozen waffles. Was he actually trying to help? She asked herself, and gave a half-smile as she saw the Everafter struggling to turn on the toaster again. She turned back to the eggs but quickly threw her arm out in front of him when she saw that he'd drawn his wooden sword, presumably to smash the kitchen appliance.
"Puck! I'll make the waffles—just calm down!"she yelped. Puck turned to her with a frown, and reluctantly sheathed his sword.
"Blasted human devices! You should consider yourself lucky you're not facing my wrath!" he scowled at the toaster as he walked over to the dinner table, and he continued to scowl until Sabrina scraped some scrambled eggs onto the plate in front of him. He had already scarfed down a considerable amount of food when Sabrina joined him at the table. She stabbed one of the waffles sitting on her plate and hovered it in front of Puck's face. He smiled sheepishly as he took the waffle off her fork. "Thanks for the breakfast Grimm, I thought I'd have to starve until the old lady got back."
"Well seeing as how I woke up with my appearances intact, I felt a little generous" Sabrina replied. She poured herself some orange juice and turned to him when she hadn't received a response. Sabrina found herself nose to nose with the fairy boy and she felt herself blushing fiercely. Puck had been trying to steal her other waffle as she poured herself some juice, but now he was just smiling wolfishly as he saw red creeping up her cheeks. Her eyes instinctively fluttered shut and when she noticed how her body was responding, Sabrina shot up from her seat. She quickly grabbed some napkins from the counter and sat herself down again.
After a few minutes of eating in silence, Sabrina finally chanced a look at Puck. His lips formed into a smile as he felt her gaze on him. "Like what you see, Grimm?" he asked cockily. Sabrina briskly stood up and headed back into the kitchen to retrieve more juice, while hiding the redness of her cheeks.
"No, but what are you looking at?" she asked, filled with frustration that she didn't have the ability to read his mind.
"Your ugly face, you freak" he retorted, but he knew that it was a lie the second that it left his mouth. You don't think she's ugly, she's actually kind of pretty in an "I wouldn't feed you to a Jabberwocky" kind of way. But the little voice in Puck's head wouldn't leave it at that. Her hair is pretty too, long, shiny, and soft too I bet. By then, Puck had to stop himself from reaching out and trying to touch her hair. And while we're talking about it, her eyes are pretty nice too. He was shocked out of his thoughts by an angry Sabrina.
"Fine rat brain, then clean this up yourself!" she shouted at him, before quickly running up to her room and slamming the door shut. Woah did I hit a nerve there? But this isn't the first time I've called her ugly, so what's the deal? Regardless, you are the Trickster King, and a stupid girl's feelings shouldn't matter to you anyhow. But she's not just any girl though, she's Sabrina. Puck silently groaned at himself and got up from the table, taking both plates up to his room.
Puck was in his room and was eating the waffle Sabrina had abandoned when he heard strange noises coming from outside. He snuck out of his room as silently as he could manage and tried to follow the sound. The sound wasn't coming from the girls' room, so he headed over to Mirror's room and leaned his head against the door. By now the sound of grunting was perfectly clear, and Puck couldn't help but go inside.
Walking into the Hall of Wonders he peeked his head into a few of the enchanted rooms until he opened a door where he clearly saw Sabrina splayed on her back, her arms outstretched, a wooden sword at her side. She looked red in the face and had clearly broken a sweat. At her feet stood an upside down yellow mop, that had one of Puck's old green hoodies, and halloween pink fairy wings stapled to the back of it. Puzzled, he walked closer to them and silently stood just within Sabrina's view, as to not disturb her. Her eyes had been closed but she felt his presence blocking the sunlight and peeked an eye open.
"What are you doing here Puck?" she asked, her voice clearly showing her irritation. What am I doing here? he thought. He had to think about this for a minute until he saw that Sabrina was still awaiting an answer.
"Here's a better question, what the hell is that?" he asked, pointing at the mop, which seemed to be enchanted to float. Sabrina quickly stood up, ran in front of the mop, crossed her arms and frowned at him.
"Its nothing," she replied quickly, shifting from foot to foot. But Puck wouldn't give. He noticed the wooden sword she'd left on the ground, and walked over to her.
"Is that supposed to be me?" he asked, his grin growing as he saw that her face had gotten redder. "Are you blushing, Grimm?" he asked, his head ducking to try and catch her gaze. His inner voice noted how he'd grown taller than her, but Puck ignored it.
Sabrina turned to him and scowled. "Yes it is supposed to be you, stupid freakbaby. And that," she pointed at the wooden sword on the floor "is what I use to hit your stupid freakbaby face"
"Well, I heard you from my room, and I wanted to see what was wrong. But obviously you're okay just taking out your love for me on poor little mop Puck here"
"Wait what?" Sabrina asked, her brows furrowing in confusion, "No, I just explained that I come here to—"
"To kiss this poor mop instead of the real thing Grimm? It's okay, we both know your secret now, no need to be shy" But Sabrina only grew more frustrated and she stomped her foot, trying to get him to listen; but it was too late. Puck had already begun his teasing and he could feel that he was getting under her skin. His wings popped out and he slowly floated towards her, taunting her with chants of "Grimm loves the Trickster King."
Puck kept getting closer and closer, and eventually landed in front of Sabrina. His wings practically cocooned them, filtering the light and making it pink. Puck was still chanting, but his voice had lowered to a whisper. He stood in front of her, looking down into her blue eyes. "So do you love me Grimm?" he asked, and the angry look on her face softened when she saw that Puck's green eyes looked like liquid gold as they stared into hers. Her face was completely flustered by this point, and she curled her hand into a fist, readying herself to punch him.
She blinked up at him when she felt his hand lightly circling her wrist. "Aww c'mon Grimm, you know that I don't like getting punched. Not unless I get to sneak a kiss in first," he teased, referring to the time he'd kissed Sabrina in his bedroom three years ago. Her features twisted into a frown and cocked her hand back to punch him, but he didn't let go of her wrist, instead bringing it up against his chest tightly as he ducked his head and brushed his lips against Sabrina's.
Sabrina's eyes had just started to flutter shut when suddenly he was gone. Sabrina opened her eyes and saw that the blond fairy was already halfway out the door that lead into the Hall of Wonders. Sabrina didn't have the energy to yell at him for being such a stupid weirdo, and instead slumped to the ground, one hand coming up to touch her lips.
