Jonas keeps running without stopping, clutching Gabe in his arms. Ahead, he sees a village, and he wonders why he never got to come here before. He looks at the baby in his arms. "We're free, Gabe."

(But not for long…)

As Jonas gets closer to the village, he sees a tall fence. With one hand grasping his brother, he climbs the fence. What he sees on the other side is a line of shack-like houses. He knocks on the door of one of them, and someone comes to the door.

It's a blond, curly-haired girl who looks to be about twelve (his own age.) "Who are you?" She asks, "And what are you doing at my house? I'm assuming that you're from the village, because of your hair and eyes, but that could just mean that your parents are from the village, like my mother. Oh, I'm being rude. I'm Primrose Everdeen. What's your name?" Jonas hesitates but somehow he knows he can trust her. "I'm Jonas and I-I'm the Giver." The girl looks confused. "What's a Giver?" Jonas explains.

"Well, where I come from, you're assigned various jobs, and you're given pills so you can't see colors or feel emotions. But I escaped." Primrose grins. "Cool, and you'll love the Seam. Well, except for the lack of food. And the Games." The girl's face pales. "I was picked to be in the Games, but my sister volunteered to save my life. She's in the Games now. She's going to win." Jonas nods, but asks, "What are the Games?" Primrose explains them.

"To stay in control, the Capitol does a Games each year. You fight to the death. The winner is honored; the losers die." Jonas shook his head. What had he gotten into when he ran away?
