Season 4-ish AU. Will eventually be JIBBS (duh).

Jenny resigns as Director of NCIS and leaves Gibbs to take over the Director's chair. Part character study, part team-fic, part romance.

Spoilers: Tiny(microscopic) mention of the events of Season 3 ep. 21/22 Hiatus, and the aftereffects in Season 4.

Prologue

She resigned as Director of NCIS on a Wednesday in March. Right in the middle of one of their customary arguments, to be exact.

"Jen, you can't just give the FBI the lead on this!"

"You and Ziva nearly got yourselves killed rushing in without backup, Jethro! I had to give the lead to the FBI!"

He snorted, brushing off her argument. "We were fine. We didn't need backup."

"You're not infalliable, Jethro! You and your stupid white-knight complex…" She stopped abruptly, shaking her head. "I can't handle this."

"Jen?"

"I quit. I'm resigning. My body literally can't handle the stress. I don't know when you're going to get yourself and your team killed, or mess up the whole agency…I'm done." She slammed the folder on her desk shut rather decisively, tossing her pen down on top of it, and was out of the office and gone before he even had the thought to call after her.

"Jenny?"

They found out in the papers over the next week that Jenny Shepard was quite the popular woman. She had been head-hunted by twelve different private corporations since the second month of her Directorship at NCIS, and with her resignation, she had finally accepted a position as CEO for a mid-level security firm called Donovan Enterprises.

NCIS, meanwhile, had practically stopped dead in its tracks while they scrambled to reorganize in the wake of such an abrupt leadership change. Tom Morrow stepped in as interim Director for a three-week grace period, before SecNav surprised the Washington brass by appointing—in either a fit of rage or insanity—Leroy Jethro Gibbs as the new Director of NCIS.

A/n: Yes, it happened. Gibbs is Director. Or, well, at least in this universe he is.
