Kino Mission 101: Interview Lin
"Lin! Tell us something nobody knows."
Lin looks up at the flying orb just above her eye line and then the young man standing just behind it holding the operating device. Some of her black hair falls into her eyes and she sweeps it behind an ear in one swift movement of her hand.
"You are wasting energy." She tells Eli before returning to her work. A paper and some sort of portable computer console on the table in front of her.
"No... um... these don't use energy off the ship." Eli sits down on the seat across from Lin showing her the console in his hand.
"See, it's completely battery powered well sort of, it doesn't use a battery like we know but it's similar. And when it's worn out the ship produces another Kino."
Lin doesn't look up from her work this time.
"And you think the ship doesn't use any energy to do that? Rush told me you were smart." Lin says matter of fact.
"He did?"
Lin looks up at Eli raising one eyebrow at his question.
"Yes, well, I am." He mentally kicks himself for not saying this in the first place.
Lin nods and returns to the computer in front of her, touching some ancient symbols on the screen. When Eli doesn't leave she looks up at him again.
"You done?"
"Uhm... no." Eli says shifting round uncomfortably in his seat. The rest of the people in the Mess Hall have turned to look at them.
Lin raises an eyebrow again.
"What if years from now when we're gone somebody finds this Kino recording? What would you want them to know?" Eli smiles uncomfortably at the woman across from him. He's never felt easy in her presence and now when she is eyeing him like this he is even more nervous. Maybe he should've just left her alone, but his male pride is kicking him forward now.
"Nobody will care." Lin says still looking at him her expression blank.
"Yes they will. They will want to know who lived on this ship, who was the people who inhabited Destiny. We will be heroes." Eli says proudly.
"You mean the people on earth will see you people from earth as heroes. As I said, nobody will care."
Eli looks sad for a moment.
"I will." He says determined.
"You will be dead, remember?"
"Right."
"Right."
"Okay then, enjoy your work." Eli says his common sense telling him he will not win this argument, if it was an argument at all. Eli wasn't sure, but he knew he'll try again, soon.
Lin looks back at her computer.
"Goodbye Eli." Lin says smiling to herself.
