All That's Left Fades Away

Don't believe everything happiness says
Nothing feels better then hiding these days
Remus Lupin stood silently by the large gated entrance to his old school. He had come here to forget, though he wasn't counting on that to work. Even in the dark, he could make out Gryffindor tower, as it was one of the tallest. The light shone through the window of the room that was once shared by the Marauders.
He preferred not to think of what he was doing as running away, but he knew there was no other name for it. He had never felt so cowardly in all his life.
Harry had been right.
But how could he return home? Hadn't he put Tonks in enough danger? And what of his baby, how could he condemn his unborn child to a life of shame?
We bury our fears in the drinks in these tears
For the days we believed we could fly
Boy how in the hell did we get here?
He had failed.
The three words described almost his entire life. He had failed to protect those he loved; Lily, James and Sirius were all gone now and his wife was forced into hiding at her parents. He would never forgive himself for marrying her! He had been so selfish, had ruined her life. Now, to add to the list, he had failed his attempt to escape, had failed to help Harry and the others.
So why don't you meet me down behind our old school
We'll waste away the weekend with perfect regard for how cavalier we used to be
That beautiful insanity the apathy surrounding me
Don't close your eyes or we'll fade, away
When we drink by the fires the burning car tires
Bad girls and good liars, the dreams we conspired
The days we went crazy, the nights wild and hazy
He knew he would have to return home; he couldn't stay here, awash in nostalgia for his old school and friends forever. He had to try, for once, to sort out this mess and do the right thing.
Man how in the hell did we get here?
Don't believe everything happiness says
Nothings as real as our old reckless ways
Wormtail- who had managed yet again to make an annoyance of himself at the manor- had been doled the task of sitting silently in a room far away from anyone else. Sitting on the desk in the otherwise empty room were several of the posters offering reward for the capture of Harry. A large picture adorned the center of the page, under the heading Undesirable #1
He looks so much like James…
Don't close your eyes or we'll fade away.
Amongst the numerous muggle posters decorating Sirius's walls, Harry was happy to find a picture of his father and his friends. James' hair was as untidy as ever, one arm thrown casually over Sirius's shoulders. Remus- or Moony, as the others in this picture referred to him- had a look of delighted surprise, while Peter stood to the right; looking, as always, a little out of place.
Harry, who wanted desperately to take the photo with him, was disappointed to find it couldn't be removed from the wall. He would have to go off without even a picture of his father with him.
How in the hell did we get here?
