A/N: This is a look into what may it may have been like if Bella had not gotten to Edward on time on that fateful day in Volterra. I wrote this maybe half a year ago, nothing great. Just a one-shot. Enjoy and review if you like.

How tragic. How ironic. Just like Romeo and Juliet. Just like Romeo and Juliet. Today is the day that I leave. Today is the day that I'm gone. I know just how Edward must have felt when he thought I was dead. Dead. The word strikes something inside me-my heart? If there's any of it left. He died. Thinking that I was dead. Died for guilt. Died for nothing.

I can't close my eyes. I can't sleep. I've gone a week without any sleep. I haven't eaten. Everytime my eyelids begin to droop, I see that day so clear and fresh in my mind, as though it was happening that second.

I ran through the square full of people. The sun cast its hot rays down on me. I ran faster. I lost my footing. I pulled myself up before I hit the ground and kept shoving through the crowd. Move faster, I urged myself. Run! His foot lay on the edge of the shadow. NO! Run faster. He was going to expose himself. I screamed to him, but over the clock tower's chimes and the noisy crowd of people, he had no chance of hearing me, even with his superior senses.

Edward stepped into the sunlight, into the square and I saw the most beautiful, deadly thing I ever had in my life. Pale, cold, sad. A broken angel bursting out light in every direction. His eyes were closed as he held out his arms and let the sun shine over him. No, Edward, no! I kept running. It was no use now, but at least I could be with him.

All was completely quiet. Every one of the red-robed tourists had turned to stare at the shining man, the sun reflecting off of him. Truly angelic. So beautiful. I had to get to him. To let him know I was alive.

And he was gone. I saw the ghost of a smile on his lips as he was dragged back into the alley by two concealed figures. Several people tried to follow, but I knew they would not find the vampires. I knew he was gone. Done for. I didn't care. I kept running, trying to shove my way through the crowd. Two, strong, ice-cold arms grabbed me from behind and pulled me back.

"No!" my scream of anguish echoed throughout the whole square, but Alice had me gone so quickly that no one would be able to trace it back to me.

No. The word that kept repeating again over and over in my head. It was a nightmare.
