Our Land Of Tears

Disclaimer: This story will be rated R for violence, language, and mature themes. It's all JK's, so don't think I made up some of these canon quotes. If you see a quote that you remember from the book, then it's from the book, aiight? ;)

A/N: Gotta thank Ells for this prologue. The day I wrote this, we were talking about writing and you inspired me to start. I still remember the first day we met, when you saved me from Filch! Soooooo much love to all the sidekicks! No R/H in this story at all, they aren't even born yet, but I hope you still read it! Thank you all so much. For everything.

Prologue

"Please, let me keep Harry. Hagrid.. I'm his godfather, I'll look after him!"

Hagrid shook his giant head very fast. "No, Sirius! I 'ave me orders, straight from Dumbledore. He wants him there, an' now!" His booming voice shook Sirius like an earthquake.

"But he's my responsibility! I have to take care of him!"

"No, Black. I can't. I'm sorry."

"YOU HAVE TO!" Sirius screamed.

Hagrid became, if possible, louder than ever.

"I 'AVE ter do nothin'! Now move aside. I 'ave ter be goin' righ' away!"

"No," Sirius whispered.

"Now, don' make me 'ave ter 'urt you, 'cause I won't hesitate. Now please, Sirius, give him to me."

So many emotions were racing through his mind. He looked down in his arms at the bundle of blankets that was Harry. He was crying. As he watched the tears stream down his godson's face, Sirius felt some roll down his cheek as well. Lily and James. Dead. Stolen from him forever. He didn't know what to think, what to feel or do. He sniffed and looked up at Hagrid. A terrible feeling swept over him, like he knew he was making a huge mistake.

"Here," he said as he handed Harry to him. "Make sure he gets there. Make sure he's...safe, Hagrid."

More tears streamed from his face. And Hagrid joined in the shedding.

"I will, Black. Guard 'im with me life, I will." And with that, he pulled Sirius into an enormus one armed hug, and turned to leave.

"Wait!" Sirius called back. "Take my bike. You'll get there faster." He pointed to his flying motorbike across the street. "I won't need it anymore."

Hagrid looked into his eyes for a moment, nodded in a hesitant sort of way, and went over to the bike. He settled himself into the seat, Harry secure on his lap, and took off without another word. Sirius watched him until he was out of sight, and then fell to the ground. The fire roared in front of him where the Potter's house had once sat. He was sobbing like a child. He didn't ever think he would stop. He started screaming. He kept screaming, even when his voice threatened to leave him.

"We...we promised," he sobbed. "We promised we'd always be together! You promised and you left! YOU LEFT!"

He pounded the ground with every bit of strength left in him. The fire made his already soaked face sweat more than ever. His long black hair was dripping like a wet towel. While water slipped off of his face, his head became packed with thought again.

If only I hadn't switched. If only I had stood my ground, they would be here. They would be safe. If only I...

He stared at the ruins before him. His fists clenched, he slowly rose up onto his feet. His course was set. He knew what he must do. He had to find Peter.
