Pairing; Maka/Soul
Nightmares
The morning came fast, pouring into the room and waking Soul from his slumber before the scheduled time and setting a bleak bar for the rest of his day.
A tired groan escaped his lips, and with heavy eyes he rolled from his bed, placing his feet on the cold floor. Beyond his door was eerily quiet, meaning that Maka wasn't awake yet, which meant it must have been early. Soul's partner Maka was always up earlier than himself. It never failed that she was in the kitchen making herself breakfast or some other far too noisy activity.
Though barely picking up his feet, Soul managed to make it to the door, and out into the den. He rubbed a hand through his disarrayed hair, and walked to the kitchen with a loud yawn.
"Too early," He moaned to himself as he passed Maka's room, pausing as he thought he heard a noise. All progress towards his breakfast abandoned he made way closer to the door, and listened quietly. It was a groan and it could only have been made by his partner.
Lowering his eyebrows he laid a hand against her door, pressing his forehead against the cold white. "Maka? You okay?" He questioned gently but there was no response. He debated on going in for a moment before making his decision.
He considered knocking, but almost immediately sided against it, slowly turning the door and slipping in. Her room was colder than his own, and slightly darker. He looked around, cleaner also.
His eyes scanned towards where he knew her bed was and immediately he spotted her, barely under the covers and facing him. It was amazing the impact just the site of her held on him, though there was no outer change in appearance as he walked closer.
As he approached closer he noticed that she was struggling to breath, her eyebrows were furrowed, her hair was sticking to her forehead, gleaming with dim grey light, and she moved every ten seconds. A sharp warning sounded in his head and squeezed his heart. A bad dream?
"Maka," He said softly, taking the final step and reaching her bedside. She remained motionless, though still clearly struggling in her sleep.
He lowered his hand, touching her shoulder very lightly. She didn't flinch at his touch. "Shh," He hushed her, raising his hand to her cheek and stroking it with his thumb. Subtly he sat at her side, somehow not waking her. "Calm down. I'm here now. I won't let anything hurt you".
A smoothness touched his face faintly which was never to be seen by anyone but her, and he watched her for more than just a moment as she settled. Her breathing leveled out, and with one final groan she seemed to be sleeping calmly.
Of course, she would never know. "Sleep well, my master." He told her. "My Maka." Unnoticeably he rose and left, but not before shooting her one last look.
He knew she'd wake soon, so he made for the kitchen, and brought down not one, but two glasses, pouring one for himself, and one for his partner.
