"We desire nothing so much as what we ought not to have." – Publilius Syrus

He has first noticed her on the train during their first year. She sat alone, immersed in a book. He got the sense that she was alone because she wanted to be, not because she had to be. She intrigued him, this girl who preferred to read rather than socialise. It was a pity that she was a Gryffindor, but he wanted her, even at the age of eleven.

She had first noticed him during their fourth year, when he demonstrated how to turn a desk into a pig in order to impress his classmates. When she came upon his demonstration, she pulled out her want, turning the pig back into a desk, before changing it into a cow, a seal, and an ocelot in turn, showing her much more advanced Transfiguration skills. She remembered him because he bowed slightly, as though conceding something, though she did not know what. Even though he was a Slytherin, she wanted him – wanted him despite herself.

They had their first classes together during their fifth year – they shared a table in Potions, sat next to each other in Transfiguration, Charms, and Defence against the Dark Arts, and were both prefects. He managed to manipulate the patrol schedule so that they were paired together.

One night, while patrolling the corridors, he pressed her against the wall and kissed her. She returned his kiss, pulling him closer to her, and from then on they were inseparable.

They were together well into their sixth year, when, quite suddenly, he took up with Walburga Black, and abandoned her. She couldn't understand why – she was faithful to him, she had done everything he'd ever asked of her, and, most importantly, she loved him.

She loved him so much, and when he abandoned her, she closed off her heart, becoming stern, strict, and cold. She wanted him still; even though he had left her, even though he had abandoned her. She never loved anyone ever again.
