I got this idea from a couple of amazing gifsets floating around Tumblr playing with the idea that Maura and Kate are twins and that Kate was raised by Paddy. Huge THANK YOU to the person who created it!

Prologue
It's chilly, but Maura forces herself to draw deep relaxed breaths to keep her body from shuddering. She's got an extra sweater in her navy colored Northface backpack but she's not sure she won't get wet in the tunnels. The night is going to be cold and she can't risk being without dry clothes.
Empty vodka bottles, plates and cardboard boxes in various states of decomposition tells her that she needs to be careful. The layering of the mold indicates there was a long time ago somebody was down here, but considering that this is a fairly enclosed environment and the fact that the high moist level in the air might speed up the process, it might be a significant shorter time somebody threw those things away.
She can't know and she won't guess.
Maura lets her Maglite sweep into the tunnel one last time. The rusty tracks disappears into the dark about fifty steps ahead of her. Words and names and dates are sprayed on to most of the walls. Some are carefully crafted with precision of an expressive artist, but most looks like it's been a sloppy past time for bored teenagers.
The concrete floor is cold and raspy against her palms. She slides down from the platform to the tracks. When her feet connects with the gravel, a soft echo spreads around her, immediately sharpening her senses. She freezes for a second, listening intensely after other sounds answering to hers. There's none to be heard so she takes a deep breath, adjusts her jacket and then she's finally ready.
She's well aware of the fact that fear of the dark is mainly a reaction from the brain when it looses its primary sense, sight, and that the strange squeaks and echoes are coming from herself. Still, her heart races with every step and it takes a significant amount of reasoning with herself to keep going. The room where she's going to meet her father is six miles from the abandoned subway station she's at now.
When the tracks separate, she glances down on her map again before choosing the route going east. The other one is probably closer, but that track connects with the track to Arlington Heights and she can't risk being seen down here.
Maura sets a moderate pace. As the fear slowly fades and the warmth starts to spread through her sleep deprived body, her main worry is the guiltiness she feels from not being able to tell Jane about all of this.
