counteract
When she cried, he was supposed to be able to console her, but no amount of coddling would reverse the pain her father caused when he walked out of her life. So he just held her as she cried and tried his best to wipe her tears away.
excruciating
He barely saw the car coming towards him at the intersection. He just saw lights and darkness. When he awoke, he felt a shooting pain up his leg. And yet when he saw Bay's tears of joy at his awakening after two weeks of unconsciousness, he was uncertain of who had been in more agony.
lazy
His friends called him a bum for never leaving his dorm room on weekends, but he didn't mind it much. Weekends were the only time he could have long conversations with his girlfriend who was going to school across the country. So he skipped the Saturday night frat parties in favor of watching The Dark Knight with his girlfriend over Skype.
And he didn't regret a thing.
squirm
She never had gotten butterflies in her stomach before. She thought it was just something lovesick teenagers made up. But on the eve of her wedding, she felt her nervousness manifesting in the pit of her stomach. He was feeling much better.
tease
She had gotten better at signing and he had gotten fonder of telling her jokes at family dinners. He knew that she had an obnoxiously loud laugh, and he loved to make her embarrass herself in front of her family. And somehow, she always managed to get even.
extinguish
She was never a jealous person, but she couldn't help feeling uneasy when Daphne told her about her feelings for him. She knew their history; she knew that she might not stand a chance against her. But when he told her his heart was with her and only her, all of those self-deprecating thoughts disappeared.
verify
They didn't initially believe the test. Maybe it was defective, maybe the results were altered by sun exposure, maybe it's something she ate. But a trip to the doctor confirmed their worst fear and greatest wish. He just hoped it didn't mean nine months of hellfire.
leave
She didn't mean it. She was angry and jealous and wrong. He had invited a girl from Carlton to his house to study, and she got the wrong impression. When he came to her house to explain, she kicked him out. She never expected him to be so persistent – who knew he was willing to sit in the rain for two hours waiting.
seem
He appeared to be fine. He was dealing with his parents' divorce in his own way. But he wasn't. He was broken up inside. And she tried to relate, but that was the problem: she couldn't. She had never gone through anything like it before. So she left him be until he was ready to talk. Turns out he needed a good cry rather than a good talk.
chill
Kansas City didn't have many beaches. A landlocked state, many people had never gotten the chance to see the ocean. So when he took her to California to visit his dad, she was amazed and scared. Standing next to it, she was finally able to understand what Emmett meant.
Standing next to an ocean can make you feel so small.
