Happy New Year, everyone! I've wanted to write a Sandman fic for a while now, so I decided to cross it over with Death Note! Enjoy!

The man lay sweating, making an effort just to breathe. He gazed up at the white washed ceiling above him. The air seemed hazy, like it would stick to your fingers if your reached out and touched it.

He just wanted to get this pain over with. He was so tired, body and soul. He was barely aware of himself slipping away…

Suddenly he was standing up, looking down on his withered form. Beside him was a young girl, dressed all in black and wearing an ankh around her neck.

"Finally," said the man. "I thought you'd never come."

"Well, I'm here now," the girl smiled kindly, holding out her hand. "Let's go, Richard."

The man took her hand. He felt a breeze rushing past him, and heard the beating of mighty wings.

Now they were no longer in the hospital, but a dank, misty landscape that seemed to stretch out forever. There were strange looking creatures all around, spiky and dressed in black, with eerie grins on their faces.

"Go with Skurg," The girl pointed out to one of the creatures. "He'll take you where you need to go."

The man hesitated.

"Oh, don't worry. They may seem scary, but they're just a bunch of pansies, really." She gave him a gentle nudge.

The creature, Skug, saw the man and stood up. The two walked off together.

The girl strolled over to another group of the creatures.

"Welcome back, my lady." The creature stood up and bowed formally.

"Hi, Akryr. How've things been going lately?

"Just fine, M'lady. All we Shinigami have been doing our job on schedule.

"Except Ryuk!" another creature chimed in.

"Ryuk?" repeated the girl. "What about him?"

The Shinigami seemed to hesitate. "He left his Death Note in the human world," he murmured.

"On purpose!" Cried another, eager to get Ryuk into trouble.

"And now a human's picked it up!"

"He's been using it to take over the world!"

The girl sighed. "Aw, geez," she muttered, running her fingers through her bushy black hair. After a moment's silence, she spoke again. "Well, I guess I'd better go back down there. Ryuk got some explaining to do."

And with that she faded into the mist.

Among the bustling streets of Tokyo, one figure stood out more than others. He was young, with neatly combed ginger hair. His eyes were downcast, and lost in thought.

"So, Light, d'ya have any more apples for me?"

The young man turned around to find a hideous creature behind him. It was spiky haired and wearing a chain and a sinister grin. Its enormous bat-like wings hovered him above the sidewalk.

"Quiet, Ryuk. I need to think. The FBI's started a search for Kira, and I can't let them discover who he is. I've got to throw them off my trail."

"Just one apple, Raito-kun?"

"Oh, all right." Light sat down on a park bench and opened up his backpack. "Here," He tossed an apple up into the air Ryuk caught it in his mouth and gobbled it up.

"Hello, Light."

Light whirled around to find a girl close to his age, dressed in a black shirt and jeans, and wearing an ankh necklace, staring down at him.

"Who are you?" asked Light. "How do you know me?"

"Oh, I know everyone really well," she turned next to him. "And hello to you too, Ryuk."

Light turned around. Ryuk's face, always frozen in the same expression, was for once, in that of fear.

"Mistress-I-"

Light mind swirled frantically. How can she see Ryuk? Does she know about the Death Note, too?

"Of course she does, Light! Don't you know who she is?" Ryuk hissed. "She's my master. The master of all Shinigami. She's Death."

I hope I'm able to do Death justice in this. By the way, I haven't read much of Death Note, so I'm sorry if I don't have all the Characters down. I'll try to write more soon!

And yes, the title is a reference to The End of Evangelion (shudders) I just couldn't really think of a good title.
