Chapter 1
Sisters
Caroline had never liked silence, she always felt the need to fill it with something, anything. The engine of the car didn't make enough sound, so she tapped the wheel with her fingers. That didn't help either. The girl who was sitting beside her hadn't made a sound after they had left home. She was leaning back on her seat, her head turned away from Caroline. "Cate?" Caroline said.
"Hmm?"
"Do you mind if I turn the radio on?"
"No."
That was the longest conversation they have had the whole day. Caroline didn't know what to say, how to comfort her sister. They had lost both of their parents and they were each other's only family now but they were like two strangers. Caroline wasn't sure how that had happened. Or maybe she did. As long as she could remember, she had been busy. Busy with her friends, busy with cheerleading, busy with student committees, busy with parties, busy with boys and so on. Unlike Caitlin, she hadn't enjoyed spending time at home. Did Caitlin really enjoy spending time at home or didn't she have anyone to spend her time with? Caroline didn't know.
She was ashamed when she realized that. She didn't know much anything about her sister. They hadn't spoken much after Caroline had moved out. She was determined to change that now, they would spend the next week getting to know each other. Caroline had already decided that she would drop out college, move back home and find a job. How could she not when her sister needed her. She would never let her sister to end up in a foster home. Moving back home was the last thing Caroline would have wanted, she had her own life and her own dreams, but her family was more important. The radio was on, but the silence didn't go away. "Cate?"
"Hmm?"
"Did you remember the milk?"
"Yeah."
"Okay…good. We have plenty of food for the whole week. The cabin should be by the lake, but I think it's too cold for swimming. Or maybe not, we could try. What do you think?"
"Yeah, whatever."
Caitlin was murmuring all her short answers, she didn't look at Caroline. The rest of the ride was quiet, apart from the radio. The small road to the cabin was bumpy, but the wooden cabin itself looked very nice, cozy. Caitlin got out of the car without saying a word. Caroline got out as well and looked at the beautiful lake view. The air was fresh. She hoped this would be the place where she and her sister would become a real family again.
