Don't let him be misunderstood
"Words really flattering are not those which we prepare but those which escape us unthinkingly." – Ninon de Lenclos
"The party was the ultimate celebration. A friend and I queued up and waited for a long time to get into the club but it was literally worth it," Melinda stated in a happy tone of voice. For the past thirty minutes, the youngest Wyatt sibling had been telling her older brother, Chris and his girlfriend Bianca about the latest events in her life.
Chris looked up from a sports magazine after having been uninterested in the conversation. It seemed to have caught his attention that his sister made some errors with English words and said: "Your use of English is wrong on so many levels," He stated plainly, shaking his head, while putting the magazine down. It was easily established that Chris was getting ready to correct his sister by the look on his face.
"Ultimate means the last. So you mean it was the last party you ever had?" Chris asked, tapping his foot impatiently, waiting for a reply from his sister who couldn't ever get an English sentence right. "No, it was one of the best parties," Melinda answered; not giving in yet but rather deciding whether she should call it a night to avoid her brother's constant corrections. Meanwhile, Chris continued "You said it was literally the best. What do you mean? Is the party happening now?" Melinda sighed "No, it happened last week. I just told you," "The term literally isn't used for emphasis but rather for something that is happening right this minute," Chris looked at Melinda with a knowing look. He liked to know he was right.
Bianca sighed heavily and placed the drinks in front of them all then gazed at her boyfriend "Chris, I think I just want to hear Mel's story now," Bianca hissed after listening to Chris correcting his sister for the umpteenth time or so it seemed. Chris shrugged his shoulders and rolled his eyes "I just want to understand what my sister is trying to tell you, that's all. Play a game of scrabble or something. That should teach her something about the English language. It's a whole different world, I'm telling you". Melinda sent Chris an icy look "I could care less". Chris, who had picked up his magazine from before, threw it from him and picked at his collar – he was getting irritated. "What did you do in all your English classes? It's a negative sentence. The correct expression is 'I couldn't care less'," Melinda went quiet and Bianca sent her an apologetic look.
It seemed like it was going to be another one of those long nights where Chris just didn't know when to stop.
