Her wails escaped from the inners of the privy chamber and ricocheted off the stone walls, creating a deafening and disturbing noise, witnessed by the King's entire court. The banquet tables were entirely covered with a whole array of exciting and exotic temptations. Not a speck of the white tablecloth could be seen, as delicacies from far off lands which had been crafted into works of art covered its entirety. The delicious foods were normally so appealing to a hungry group of well-fed men after a long days hunting; but it looked unappealing to them tonight. Normally buzzing with excited chatter awaiting the Kings royal arrival, today the vast room lay silent, as if in mourning. Lady Culpepper, heavily pregnant herself, looked positively ill at the thought of the Queen's pain she would immanently face too, she retired to her rooms before even the King arrived.
The King emerged from his chambers and strode confidently towards his seat, as he always did, and sat in his chair at the head of the table, facing all his courtiers. He did not seem to have let the deafening disturbance dampen his spirits, he was smiling and whilst greeting his entourage seemed if anything, happier than per usual. He sat down next to two of his closes courtiers and remarked to the man on his left 'Nothing will diminish my happiness tonight' thus signaling the start of the meal; but very few people felt comfortable enjoying themselves in the presence of such agony.
Finally, after several hours, the screaming ceased much to the relief of many of the courtiers. Minutes later a young timid woman, pale and exhausted, peered around the door to the main hall, and crept silently over to the King. She dropped him a deep courtesy and whispered something into his ear. His face lit up immediately, he stood up, knocking over a flask of wine in the process but he was unperturbed by this, he bellowed: "My wife, the Queen of England, has just produced an heir to the English throne!" At this the entire room stood up and cheered; they had been waiting for this day for almost a decade.
The King's first wife died in childbirth after giving birth to a sickly girl, who died shortly after as well. The court was in mourning for almost a year, until the King remarried. She had given birth to two girls, Elizabeth and Jane, when she gave birth to a still born son, another tragedy occurred. However, finally, another daughter, Catherine, later, the King finally had a male heir to call his own. Elizabeth, Jane and Catherine were all strong and healthy, but they were incapable of the numerous responsibilities of running the country, which a son of a noble King, such as that sat on the throne in our tale, would surely have. Despite this, as with previous monarchs, the King did not neglect or despise his three daughters; in fact he adored them; although this did not compensate for his desire to have a son.
Prior to the birth of the boy, the next in line to the throne was the Kings nephew, his younger brother's eldest son Thomas, who the King loathed and blamed for the death of his brother and Thomas's father, who had died of mysterious circumstances. The King wanted to do everything in his power to avoid this occurrence.
The court eventually broke out into celebration, with elaborate dancing which continued until the early hours of the morning. The King could not be happier, and his wife, the Queen appeared to have survived the horrors of childbirth and their son would continue to run this noble country after they were long gone. Everything was perfect.
