Marlene McKinnon was no ordinary girl. For she was that of magic. Each day from a young age, she would make her brothers hair turn into an extraordinary colour, to his great annoyance.
Not only was she the only girl in a large wizarding family, but she looked entirely different to the rest of them. From those of pure blood, rumours spread around saying that Marlene's mother had had enough of her beloved husband, Alfred, and found someone else to spend her evenings with. Of course, this was pure nonsense and no one, including Alfred McKinnon believed it. For Marlene was exactly like her father. They shared the same mannerisms, the same humour, the same expressions on their faces. Her hair, however, was a gleaming glow of red, whereas the rest of her family were all blessed with dark brown, almost black hair. No one knew where she got her ruby hair from; it was to remain a mystery.
Everyone in the family knew that she was not only physically different, but she was something to be taken seriously in the family. For she was one to stick to the rules and obey them. But purely inside, she was good. Of course, she took great pride and enjoyment out of tormenting her older brothers who always got the telling off, as according to Marlene's Grandmother, Marlene was "far too mature to do something so silly!". She got away with murder.
Her family knew that the day would come, as always at an eleventh birthday and the letter would arrive. And it did.
