My first fanfic!

Well. I had the idea for this one-shot while I was listening to Heartless by The Fray. Then I basically couldn't sleep because the idea wouldn't leave my head, so I gave up and wrote it down. Then I went to sleep and published it in the morning.

It's set in TLO, while Percy is telling Annabeth what he saw when he bathed in the Styx and why he gave up immortality.

I wrote what I thought it would happen if Annabeth didn't love him.

I hope you like it. :)

Disclaimer: I don't own anything at all. Specially PJO.

"Percy" Annabeth called, bringing him to a halt "I can't.".

"You... What?" Percy looked confused, taken aback by her words.

She took a deep breath and a determined look took over her face "I can't. You're my best friend, nothing else. We've been through a lot together. We've gone to hell and back together. We fought many battles, many enemies together. But I can't do this. I don't like you that way."

The confused look on his face asked almost every question he had, but he spoke all the same "But... That kiss at Mount St. Helens..."

"I only did that because I wasn't sure of my feelings for you then, and I didn't want to realise later that I never told you I might have liked you as more than a friend. But I did realise later I don't like you as more than that..."

Percy's expression was confused, sad, bitter. But, most of all, it showed betrayal. That made Annabeth feel a pang of guilty, but she didn't stop.

"...And I did realise I don't love you."

Neither of them spoke for a while, as Percy kept staring at the ocean and Annabeth at Percy's face.

Finally, he faced her.

Annabeth took a sharp breath as she took in his expression.

His carefree smile that always lurked in the corners of his mouth was gone. His usually glowing green eyes were almost as dark as the forest behind them. All his face setteled in a pained expression, full of resentement and bitterness. He wasn't Percy. He couldn't be.

"I gave up everything for you, Annabeth. I held the sky for you. I stayed behind to die for you. I left paradise for you. I gave up on immortality twice for you. And this is how you thank me?"

"Percy..." She tried to make him stop, but failed to do so.

"I did everything for you, and I would do everything all over again without thinking twice. I would do anything for you. Anything."

"Percy. I know you would, but..."

"But what? I'm too stupid for you?" He cut through her sentence.

"No! I never said that!" Annabeth tried to explain. "I just... You're just... I... I don't love you enough."

Percy laughed. A bitter laugh, so unlike Percy that she was at a loss for words.

"You don't love me enough, is that? Then, I should better get going and leave you to search for someone you do love enough." He stood up and began to walk away.

"Percy, wait! I'm still your friend! You can't just leave me like this!"

He turned arround and spat his next words at her face.

"Yes, I can, Annabeth! You always bossed me arround telling me what to do. But now... Now I'll do what I want, and you won't be there to stop me."

She began to cry, mumbling "Percy. Please don't do this. Please." over and over again.

"I didn't do anything. It was all you. It's too late already, Annabeth. You made your choice. Now learn to live with the consequences." He turned around once more and tried to leave, but Annabeth grabbed his hand and stopped him again.

"No, Percy! Please!"

Percy looked into her grey tearful eyes, and she looked right back at his green eyes, trying to stop him. But she saw something break inside them.

"I love you, Annabeth."

She saw the decision in his eyes.

He was right. It was too late.

"Goodbye."

He turned for the third time that night and left, leaving his heart behind.

He was heartless.
