Modern!AU || Fred Lives!AU
~ For 2D ~
The bright summer morning was unusually cold, a chill sweeping through the deserted streets they walked on. Though it wasn't really morning anymore, he supposed, squinting up at the sun - more like an early noon. It was the demon they were tracking that chilled the town's air. And though the cold bothered him, he couldn't help but smile. This meant they were close.
"Fred!" He heard George shout from behind him. It was clear from his tone that he was annoyed.
"Yeah?" Fred replied, slowing his pace so that George could catch up.
"How much longer do you think this mission will take?"
Fred hesitated in his reply, he didn't know. He was as in the dark as his twin, and for once that annoyed him. The ministry had them, regular aurors, on a mission against a demon they'd only ever read about. Fred supposed it was because they were war heroes, though if that was the case why not have Harry and Ron take up this mission instead.
"Not much longer," he replied, "just keep an eye out. This thing could look like anyone."
He chuckled as George rolled his eyes, annoyance clear on his features. It was common knowledge to them now that these demons could shapeshift. Fred almost laughed at the memory. They'd learned this the hard way when they'd entered their previous hotel. It was frigid at the receptionist's desk, yet they'd ignored the blaring signs and in a flash the demon was in their faces and even quicker out the door.
"That's what you always say," George grumbled, trudging forward anyway.
They checked into a small motel at the center of town, getting a single room that would undoubtedly be just as cold as the streets. It was now, in the quiet times, that Fred wished to be back home. There was no quiet in the Weasley household, it was always filled with the cheerful conversation of his family. He tried to stave off another shiver. Soon, he told himself. Soon the mission would be over and he could go home.
They walked down into the square, practically ignored by the other people. All but one, a small old woman sitting by the fountain. It wouldn't have been too odd to him, because surely there would be someone staring at them. There always was. But he couldn't help but notice the fountain. It was flowing freely on every side but the one the woman was on, on her side it had turned to ice.
Fred glanced over at George, a small smirk growing on his face. George had seen it too. This demon, instead of trying to run away, was overly confident. It followed them everywhere, taunting them before running off to some other random location. It would finally find this as it's downfall.
"I'm starving," George announced loudly, drawing more eyes than just the woman's.
"Me too," Fred agreed, beginning to walk and being overjoyed when the creature followed them.
"I heard there's a good place just down the corner," he added, watching George's face scrunch up for a second. There was only an alley around the corner, a dead end. Though his eyes lit up a second later, as if he had the most brilliant plan.
"I forgot my wallet in the room," he began with a sheepish grin. "I'll meet you there."
Fred began walking the street alone, the cold growing stronger as the woman continued to follow him. He smiled to himself, turning the corner and walking a small way. His gaze found the brick wall ahead of him, and he quickly whipped around, wand aimed at the demon. Panic crossed it's features momentarily, it tried turning around, but George on rushed in behind it. They shared a small smile.
"Gotcha."
