Mummy's only sleeping

My mummy went out to work one day

And it was very cold

Oh! I forgot something important!

My name's Ryan, I'm five years old.

My mummy wears a dress to work,

It's thin and very torn

I look at her and often think:

It can't be very warm.

My mummy went to work one day

And it was very cold

The constable came home that night

And I was still in bed

I was very good and let him in

And this is what he said.

'Heavens, Ryan how you've grown!

You're taller every day!

Your mother must've been proud of you

Or so I'd heard her say.'

He spoke all wrong

Like mum was gone

But I knew better then

After all, what did mummy say?

I'll come home when I can.

Of course I knew that mum'd come home

So I'd no longer be alone

The constable said 'come with me

Please Ryan, you must know…

Your mother is no longer here

And it's now time to go!'

He took me to the hospital and mummy was in bed

The doctor took the constable aside

And told him she was dead

But through the door they had not seen

That I had just been creeping

I walked to them and smiled and

Said 'No, my mum's just sleeping'

I smiled for a moment and I looked at mummy's bed

But she was gone and there was lots of

Blood around her head.

My jaw dropped but I shook it off

And this is what I said:

'My mum is awful silly and she does this quite a lot

she'll be home as always and be gone then from this spot'

So I went home so very sure that I was right

And they were wrong

For my mum just was sleeping and I knew it all along

And now in this dark cell

I see her smiling just for me

Don't tell me that I'm crazy

because this is

What I see!

Her love for me is burning

And it's for this very reason

That Borhamwood's so very hot

Though the heat is out of season

And I won't leave till mummy leaves

Though it may be a while

I'd burn to hell a thousand times

If only to see her smile…
