A Matter of Questionable Sanity
Hell, it's not like she hasn't done this before. The whole grab onto something and start pounding thing, that is. And it's not like Fredward's never been on the receiving end. She remembers a day when he hinted heavily that that one week (or four days?) was on some level worse.
After that, she's sorely tempted to make up for it. Opportunities come, of course. Sometimes she wonders if it's supposed to make Carly suspicious. ("You know, they say when a girl constantly rips on a guy, it really just means she has a crush on him.") And then she wonders why in the hell that thought entered her mind. Fish gotta swim. Nothing else to it, right? Right.
"It's be too weird if you didn't make my life miserable all the time." And she knows it goes both ways.
Sometimes it tilts too far her way.
The racket had a good weight in her hand, and that old Sam fervor was running through her blood at the thought of swinging it violently. But when she gets the boy out of sight for the beating of his life. Well. Someone alert the press. Sam Puckett is hesitating. And it's not because she's once again thrown off by that extra inch or two of height he's gained and maybe she's having a (horrible) vivid flashback to those eyes hovering closer.
The racket hit the treehouse wall within a split second. Make no mistake: her grip is still tight and her teeth are still barred. But thank whatever god refills the Shay's fridge that he cries out in a reflex. So she goes with it. It lasts all of ten seconds, and when the frame of the racket finally snaps and they stare at it, she throws caution to the wind and leans (you've got to be out of your mind), and stops herself in time. Freddie doesn't follow suit.
Chaste isn't quite the word but it's brief enough to go by. He has that same look on his face. Dubious. (Crazy.)
Later he's going to ask in a half whisper, what that was all about. She'll reach out and muss his hair again and ask if he really wants to know.
Honestly, she doesn't.
