Disclaimer: I'm not getting money off this. Obviously. I wouldn't be so poor otherwise.
A/n: This was inspired by me hollering at the TV, "Sarah, SAY SOMETHING!" after Chuck's little "I'm-crazy-about-you-but-we-can't-live-together" speech on Monday during "Chuck vs. The Lethal Weapon". I don't remember the exact dialogue of Chuck's speech, so it's paraphrased. Enjoy. :)
"I can't move in with you, Sarah." Chuck looked down at his shoes sadly. "I mean… you and I both know how I feel about you. I'm crazy about you! I can… I can handle the fake relationship. But fake living together, day in and day out…"
Chuck sighed and turned away from Sarah's profile.
Tears tingled in her eyes and she swallowed them down.
There were so many things she wanted to say to him, so many things she couldn't and shouldn't. She probably couldn't count the reasons why they would never really be together – there were too many. The whole spy thing made everything far too dangerous and complicated.
She, at least, had chosen this life. She had made the life-changing decision to live everyday working to make the world a safer place. Chuck had it unceremoniously thrust on him out of the blue and he struggled with it constantly. She knew his feelings for her didn't make it any easier. Her feelings for him certainly made things harder too.
He stood with another heavy sigh and began to walk away.
"Maybe it doesn't have to be fake." She whispered, before she could stop herself.
He thought he'd heard her, but he couldn't be sure. She'd spoken so softly, he wanted to double check he had not imagined it. He turned to her, his breath catching. "What?"
She closed her eyes for a moment. Compartmentalizing the emotion bursting in her chest, she took a small breath and was both relieved and saddened that he had not heard her. Half a second later, she swiveled to face him, a bright smile pasted on her face.
"Hmm? Nothing. See you later, Chuck." She breezed past him.
He watched her go, deflating. He wished his mind hadn't played such a trick on him. He'd swore he'd heard her… but obviously he hadn't.
Chuck closed his eyes for a moment. Swallowing his emotion, he pushed the words he'd said to Sarah and her lack of response out of his mind, then steeled himself to tell Ellie he wasn't moving out after all.
Around the corner and out of sight, Sarah swiftly brushed away a single tear.
