Doyle walked down the halls, occaisonally sighing heavily. Some people looked at him funny and others eyed him with sympathy. Angel walked beside him silent and pensive, but worry clear in his face.

"Do you want to talk about it Doyle?" he asked quietly.

"Nah man." Doyle muttered managing a small smile. "I just want to see 'er that's all."

When the two friends rounded the corner, a doctor rushed up to them. Angel answered the doctors questions and Doyle slipped into her room.

She lay on the bed, her face peacful yet marred with a tiny cut just below her bangs. Her eyes were closed but fluttered every so often. Her hair fanned out over her shoulders in the teasing way it always did. Her hands were untouched still. She breathed, but it was labored.

Doyle sat down next to her almost afraid to touch her. The room was silent except for the beeping of the machines that surrounded them. Sunlight poured through the windows, a slight heat on his face, as Doyle cautiously took her hand. There was a lump the size of a grapefruit in his throat as he struggled out her name.

"Cordelia..."

"Shh..." Cordy's eyes fluttered open. "It was so peaceful. Just hold my hand."

"I want to tell you..." Doyle pleaded his voice trailing off as she touched his face.

"Smile for me." she whispered.

"I can't."

"Then tell me I'll be ok?"

Doyle paused, a shaky sigh escaping. "I can't princess."

Cordelia breathed in a shaky sigh. "How can I leave you guys?"

"Cordy don't do this. I can't stand seeing you like this!" Doyle put his head in his hands. "I can't believe I wasn't there."

"Don't blame yourself." Cordy struggled to sit up.

Panic rose in Doyle's throat. "Princess lay down!"

"NO!" she exclaimed. "Doyle look at me."

He did, his eyes feeling as though they weighed a million pounds. Suddenly, he wanted to leave. He wanted to run away and be anywhere else but where he was. But at the same time he was trapped in her eyes.

"Do you love me?" she asked.

"I can't lie." he whispered. "Since I saw you..."

Cordy leaned into his open arms. She sighed heavily. "I care about you so much..."

"It's too soon. I know." he choked out, rocking her gently. "Angel loves you too honey."

"I know. I'm so sorry Doyle."

"Shhh..." He kissed her forehead gently.

"I wish we could have gotten more time..." she whimpered, tears running down her face.

"I know." Doyle's voice broke and he buried his head in her warm neck, unable to stop his grief.

Cordy lifted his head up and kissed him deeply. He leaned in, shocked but unable to break away. She broke the kiss softly and kissed his forehead.

"I have to sleep now."

Doyle took her hand. "I know, princess. I'll miss you."

She closed her eyes for the last time and smiled.

Then the silence came over the room once more. The beeping stopped and the wailing tone was so loud Doyle thought he would go insane.

But he couldn't let go of her hand.
