Smoothing It Over

"You don't have to do this," Lily says.
Scorpius stares at his girlfriend. Then he looks past the walkway to the house in Godric's Hollow. "Yes, I do. We're building a relationship together, aren't we?" He takes her hand and gives it a gentle squeeze. "I want your family to like me."
"Albus likes you," Lily interjects helpfully.
"Well, that's one out of… How many aunts, uncles, and cousins do you have again?"
She rolls her eyes.
"And anyways Al may not like me after he finds out I'm dating his little sister."
She sighs. "Okay, but I should apologize ahead of time. When James and Freddy eat, it's kind of a grotesque sight to witness."
He thinks Lily might be exaggerating, but he humors her. "Duly noted. Now no more stalling. Let's go."
Hand-in-hand, they walk up the cobbled pathway. Lily opens the door and the two of them walk into a loud ruckus.
Scorpius breathes deeply. He sees James with a chicken leg sticking out of his mouth and realizes Lily hadn't been kidding about James' eating habits.
It doesn't matter. He'll win the Potters and Weasleys over. He refuses to come between Lily and her family.
When everyone realizes there are two more people in the room, the wild motions stop.
Rose crosses her arms over her chest, an ugly glare painted across a normally pretty face.
James doesn't look much happier.
Mrs. Potter looks curious, and Mr. Potter looks neutral. Only Albus seems happy with Scorpius' appearance.
"Why are you holding my baby sister's hand?" James asks in a low tone.
Lily glares at her oldest brother. "Because we're dating. You have a problem with that?"
James turns his angry look onto Lily. "As a matter of fact, I do."
Rose butts in and huffs, "You can't trust him, Lily. Albus might have already fallen down the rabbit hole, but there's still hope for you."
"You might let your dad influence you with his hate for all things Malfoy, but I have my own mind."
Scorpius clears his throat. "For me, dating Lily is like flying. I might as well be soaring on my broomstick with the breeze going through my hair. Maybe that sounds cliched, but it's the truth. I've never been happier since the moment I began dating Lily."
James crosses his arms over his chest. "I don't like it."
"James, to be fair, you probably wouldn't like anyone dating Lily. Just like I hate the thought of someone dating my little girl." Harry sighs. "I've learned some things since I was a teenager. You can't move on if you're still in the past. I know some people may always hold onto their prejudices, but I refuse to."
"You mean that, Daddy?"
"Yes, yes I do. I still don't like it, but I'll deal. Just like the rest of the family will deal if they know what's good for them," Harry warns.
There are still some angry faces, but they know better than to say anything.
Here Scorpius thought he'd be the one to smooth things out between Lily and her family, but Mr. Potter is the one that accomplished it.
