Thanks to The Magnetic Fields and their new song, 'You Must Be Out Of Your Mind'
///
In your eyes there rests the biggest of hopes, wrapped up in warm brown and on your face is that hesitant smile, the kind you have perfected for moments just like this one…
…and like a fractured fairy-tale, jotted down by your own hand, you look for happy endings at my feet.
But you never slayed that dragon, girl.
You just turned tail and fled.
///
I've been writing my own story since you've been absent, though.
And there are no witches to be found – glossy and lovely, weaving spells that I just can't break.
And there are no princes riding up – cut from stone and too tall, puffed out chests full of hot air.
Here in my tower, I finally woke up.
And I won't be leaving by the window, neither bed-sheets nor a ladder of hair to guide me back out again.
I'll walk right out the front door.
///
Kings and queens, they just step aside… and I keep my head high, because this is my world now.
Hallways and locker doors and bullet holes lurking underneath new cement, this is my world now.
Books and jokes and tears and good-byes, this is my world now.
And there is no room for girls pretending to be heroes anymore, not in this world.
And in your eyes, I see the hope. And on your face, I see that smile. And I know what you are looking for as you stutter apologies, as you reach out and try to hold me… Still trying to have your cake and eat it, too. Still living in your universe with no labels to bind you and no consequences to haunt you…
…But you never slayed that dragon, girl.
You just turned tail and hid.
And I don't have room for a girl like that anymore, not in this world.

"You know what? You guys should talk, um, because I'm not really sure I really want to have this conversation right now."
And Spencer gets up, leaving Ashley behind and not a single look back.
This is my world now.
