Hot Chocolate on a Rainy Day

"I'm not upset," he said, ignoring the proffered mug. "I'm just tired."

Fuji put the mug back on the counter, grabbed his own, and padded over to next to Tezuka.

"Saa," said Fuji as he scrunched himself up and settled down to watch the raindrops thump softly on the sidewalk beyond the glass door. "If you say so, then."

Tezuka frowned and tapped his fingers against the floor. "I'm not upset," he said again, though he knew he was only trying to convince himself. He laid back and propped his head up on his hand. Outside the wind picked up and smashed the rain against the glass, hard. If only he'd thought of something else he could do…maybe…

"It was the right choice, Tezuka. You couldn't have done anything else."

Tezuka sighed. "I know," he said.

Next to him, Fuji slurped his hot chocolate. It smelled soft.

Tezuka sighed again; no doubt Fuji had been planning this since Tezuka had gotten back from the meeting.

Outside, two kids ran hand in hand across the street, splashing rain from the puddles everywhere. Tezuka stretched, stood up, got his hot chocolate from the counter and sat down next to Fuji.

"I'm not upset," he said, and smiled.

They watched the rain for a long time.
