554. No Sign of Heaven
Edward Elric was not sure when he stopped believing in God, or if he ever did believe in the first place.
His scientific mind had never seen any evidence of a God or heaven. What kind of god would have taken away the only parent two young boys had? What kind of god would have allowed Tucker to experiment on his own daughter? There was so much more that Ed had seen during his quest for the philosopher's stone. Corrupt military officials, insane killers, it all made him more convinced that there was no god.
There's a kind of irony in this, after all the Fullmetal Alchemist had to put his hands together, as if in prayer, in order to use his alchemy. And let us not forget that the fact that the Elric brothers are still alive after everything they have been through has to be some kind of miracle.
