I Regret
A very short one-shot written by Jordan Walker.
"We're not supposed to come this way," Eric reminded, glaring at Sam.
"I still don't believe in the monster," Sam rolled his eyes.
It had been a week since Ralph's demise. The tribe had hunted him down and killed him the day after Roger had murdered Piggy. Things seemed to have gotten much quieter since then... much lonelier. Jack hadn't talked much either, except for shouting out orders. Samneric themselves had started to become reclusive from the tribe, spending most of their days hiking around and talking to each other.
"The cave's just up here. We should turn back," Eric suggested.
"..." Sam was silent as he kept walking.
"What if Jack gets upset?"
"He doesn't know we're here."
The sun was setting and the jungle was getting darker. Eric couldn't imagine why Sam wanted to go toward the monster's cave so bad. Looking around cautiously, he followed him in curiosity. Samneric kept walking further, tip-toeing over a thorny glade of strange plants. Eric was getting more and more nervous, hating to admit that he was afraid of what they both knew did not exist.
"Is..." Eric stuttered. "Are you... alright?"
"I'm fine," Sam took a deep breath, his walking style gradually becoming more of a dramatic march.
Eric was breathing heavily. The sun had almost completely disappeared behind the trees. Struck with fear, he felt like turning back, but before he could say anything, Sam grabbed his hand and held it firmly as they pressed onward.
"Sam..." Eric whispered.
Sam didn't respond. Suddenly, he stopped walking.
"Sam," Eric whispered again, staring at his brother.
Eric slowly looked forward. Standing right in front of them was a tall spear, which held on top of it the rotting head of Ralph. Samneric both stared up at Ralph's head in complete silence. The grip of their hands faded, and they let go. Ralph's ghoulish, lifeless eyes gazed down upon the twins like a vengeful demon that haunted the boundaries of the cave – the cave they knew was empty. The look on the deceased boy's face showed fear, reminding Samneric of the cruelty of Jack's resentment. It showed courage, reminding them of Ralph's endurance. It showed death, reminding them of Piggy and... what was the other's name?
Samneric were both too guilty to admit that Simon's death was utterly the tribe's fault, and they too assisted in the gruesome murder. And then Ralph... They both knew what they had done. Ralph was right... they were both just another one of Jack's slaves... and now Ralph was gone. The sin could never be undone.
Eric slowly looked over to Sam. A steaming tear drifted down Sam's face, and he began to weep.
"I... I..." Sam took fast breaths.
Eric couldn't help but sob while watching his brother cry.
Sam lowered his head, burying his face into his hands. He sniffled several times before stopping, and slowly, he looked up at Eric. Swallowing hard, he put his hand on Eric's chest and looked up at Ralph's head.
"I regret."
