Ash sat by on a log, facing the lake, the water reflecting a gleaming trail of moonlight. Brock, Dawn and Pikachu were fast asleep only fifty meters or so away where they were camping. It was around midnight and Ash couldn't really sleep. He had snuck away from the camp quietly, not wanting to wake anyone up. It used to be rare that Ash would fall into a solemn and contemplative mood. However, as he had grown older and matured, he began to ponder things on his own more often. Thoughts such as as where he was heading in life, how his Pokemon were doing back at Professor Oaks lab, and the ones he had released, how all his friends were doing, and how his mum was fairing now often now crossed the sixteen year old's mind. He was currently doing well in Sinnoh, having acquired five gym badges already, and he was happy about that, yet he felt something was missing in his life. He missed his mum. He missed Misty. He missed Gary and Professor Oak. And he missed all his other Pokemon back in Pallet. Ash sighed. I dunno...maybe I'm sulking too much Ash thought sullenly.

His thoughts then trailed off to the last time he had seen Mewtwo, which had been three years ago at Mount Quena. He wondered how he and the other Pokemon were doing. He wondered if each Pokemon had found there happiness in the world they so longed to belong in. It would still be hard for them, but not as hard as it would be for Mewtwo, and this upset him.

Mewtwo was a long time friend of his, and his Pokemon was more human-like than any other Pokemon Ash had ever known; and even though he accepted that all Pokemon were sentient, communicative, reasoning beings, he felt that Mewtwo was different. It was like Mewtwo was on the same par as humans. The same intelligence, emotions, communicative abilities, and a strong will that exceeds the desires of ordinary Pokemon, except perhaps for some legendaries, he had encountered during his six year journey. He also looked more human like than any other Pokemon Ash had seen. He was humanoid and bipedal, and had striking eyes that communicated every emotion that needed to be exchanged between two individuals. Ash remembered that when he had last seen him at Mount Quena he had thought that the Lavendery-white humanoid Pokemon was stunningly attractive, particularly with those, intense breathtaking violet eyes of his.

Ash shivered. The memory filling him with a strange, warm emotion.

His thoughts then strayed to Mewtwo's situation.

Mewtwo couldn't live like other Pokemon. He couldn't exist in the sun. He could only stay hidden due to what he was and the trouble it would cause him if he was seen by humans that he wasn't familiar with. He remembered Mewtwo saying something just like this to him.

"The moon reflects the light of the sun. Pokèmon born into this world may walk freely in that sun. But we were created, reflections. We are shadows. Perhaps we should not live in sunlight, but in the shadows of moonlight"

How sad that must be for him Ash thought sadly. Unknown to him, silent tears began to trail down his face. He didn't know why it bothered him to this extent. It just did. It hurt. He wished he knew where Mewtwo was. Just to see him. To know he was okay. Not just physically, but also mentally. To know he was not in pain. To offer some sort of comfort. To touch him...

He remembered the last contact he thought he had had with him. He wasn't sure but he thought Mewtwo had spoken to him telepathically that night three years ago just after the incident at Mount Quena.

If you hear my voice, know that it is my spirit calling across time and space...to yours.

Thank you. I will remember you always.

Ash smiled, and the tears fell harder.

The moon hung high in the sky over Mount Quena where he had briefly returned to for a period of time, its light gently illuminating whatever it touched. The light softly caressed a figure that stood alone, overlooking the land before him as far as his eyes could see. He, too, was deep in thought, though it was much more of a regular state. His thoughts, too, wandered. Some destinations at which it arrived, however briefly or lengthily, were more pleasant or unpleasant than others. His mind finally settled when its thoughts fell on that boy. Mewtwo closed his purple eyes as he recalled that message he had given him. And then, with a painful feeling left behind, he turned and retreated.

"That was a great battle Ash!" Dawn called, leaping at her friend and crushing him into a hug.

Ash had just acquired his sixth gym badge after a very difficult battle. Pikachu cheered, and Brock glided over to offer his friend a warm smile. "Congratulations Ash" he said kindly. Ash smiled at his friends.

"Thanks guys!" he said cheerfully.

"Though I couldn't have done it without your advice!"

Brock and Dawn smiled cheerfully at him. Pikachu jumped into Ash's arms and murmured happily.

"I know. Thank you, Ash" said Brock.

"Why don't we all go out and celebrate this terrific victory!?"he said excitedly.

Ash and Dawn smiled and nodded eagerly.

"Yes, food!" Ash cheered, his stomach growling at the thought of good food.

The four friends then went out to the city's nicest buffet lounge and as usual the boys stuffed their faces to Dawn's consternation, and Brock attempted to flirt with all the pretty girls who just giggled at him demurely. It was at desert time when a very peculiar thing happened.

Desert wasn't a buffet, it was a course of the restaurants best cookies which took many shapes and were famous around the city. Molly, the restaurant owners nine year old daughter, who was also training to be a chef like her father walked up to the table happily, her brown pigtails bobbing cutely as she walked.

She then served the quad some cookies from her tray. Dawn beamed happily, and took a content bite. Ash and Brock smiled at her, looked down at the cookies and shared a disturbed look.

"Molly?" Ash asked in trepidation.

"How did you come to make these?"

Molly frowned.

"I mixed some cinnamon, flour, milk, eggs-"

"No!" Ash interrupted suddenly, a little too harshly. He then offered an apologetic smile and spoke more softly.

"I mean, how did you know what form to make these cookies in?"

Molly blinked and the smiled.

"Oh, I saw that Pokemon standing on a building a couple of nights ago. It's silouette was very tall and magnificent!" she enthused happily.

Ash turned back to Brock and they shared another look. Pikachu looked from person to person worriedly.

Dawn swallowed her mouthful of cookie.

"What!?" she asked everyone who was acting weird.

Ash, Brock and Pikachu looked down at their cookies once more.

It was Mewtwo.

Mewtwo looked outside and noted the brightness of day. He noted with a hint of melancholy that he could not go outside and enjoy it. To do so carried far too much risk if he was spotted. The Pokemon sighed. Burdensome, to be sure, however necessary it may be... He thought. Mewtwo put the thought out of his mind and shifted his attention elsewhere... contemplation, meditation, making and solving puzzles of his own to keep his mind sharp.

To say that Ash, Brock and Pikachu were concerned was an understatement. Sure it wasn't Molly's fault, but if the image of Mewtwo became known around the city. and they would, considering how popular the restaurant's cookies were with the people, then that could be very bad for Mewtwo. Thankfully, it was the first night Molly had served them, as she had only just changed the image of her cookies to another Pokemon. After the restaurant closed, Ash, Brock, Dawn and Pikachu sat down with the family at their house and explained some things. Ash had saved Molly's Piplup from one of Jessie, James' and Meowths schemes, which is how they had all become friends. He explained the general idea to the family that the Pokemon Molly had seen and made into the image of her cookies, was a friend of his, and told them it would be very dangerous for him if she were to continue making her cookies in this image. He requested that they change the image, and the family immediately apologised and said they would surely change the image and keep what had been disclosed to them a secret. The quad were grateful, even Dawn who had been filled in by Ash after dinner.

The only thought that lingered in Ash's mind was: 'What was Mewtwo doing here in Sinnoh!?

As the day went on, Mewtwo felt strange, though he could not pinpoint the reason why. At first he found it easy to ignore simply by focusing his attention elsewhere. Over time, however, it became stronger and more permeating. He could ignore it no longer. What puzzled him even more was that this feeling, one of concern, almost did not seem to even be coming from within him. Noting this, Mewtwo decided that this should be what he focused on. At that, he sat down and began to ponder, his eyes shining brightly.

That night, Ash, Brock, Dawn and Pikachu were invited to stay with Molly and her family. The guests were put in a spare bedroom with two bunk beds. Brock and Dawn were in the bed across from him, and Pikachu and some of his other Pokemon were on the top bunk of his own bed, leaving Ash on the bottom one.

Once more, Ash could not sleep and he found himself getting up and taking a stroll along the beach that was not far from the house. The waves crashed up onto the sand, and the moonlight was reflected in the water. Tonight was a full moon, and as Ash looked up at it, a strange eerie emotion filled him.

His thoughts turned to Mewtwo. He was here! In Sinnoh! Why!? And why was he feeling so...down.

Did Mewtwo know Ash was here as well? Surely he did. Then, why didn't he come and see him? And why on earth did Ash expect him to?

It made no sense.

Ash shook his head.

Mewtwo can take care of himself he thought.

All I can do is help out if any rumours arise.

And he had. Still, after the incident at Mount Quena, surely Mewtwo must consider them to be friends.

Why are you helping me?

Do you always need a reason to help someone?

Perhaps you are unique...A unique human...One of a kind...!

You're one of a kind too!

Heh. I don't know WHAT I am! And soon it may not matter...

Mewtwo had been so focused on his new puzzle that he had not noticed the passing of time. Upon noticing that it was now nighttime, he stood and walked outside, looking up at the sky. He was instantly bathed in moonlight, which particularly lit up his eyes. Were anyone there to see him, he would look beautiful. A full moon... He thought, and decided to watch the sky for a bit. However, a new feeling washed over him... He felt as though he was not alone in watching the moon. There was no one nearby. Mewtwo was absolutely certain of that.

And yet...

He found himself puzzled anew.

Ash exhaled. Dwelling on this would not accomplish anything. He needed to sleep. With a final sigh, he turned, and walked back to the house, hopped into bed and stared at the wall for a while, before finally falling into a restless slumber.

Just as quickly as the feeling had arrived, it vanished. Mewtwo was slightly surprised, but reasoned that perhaps he had truly been alone all along. What he could not so easily reason, however... was why he found himself with a peculiar kind of pain after it vanished. A sort of sadness... almost a kind of longing.

Lugia was enjoying his vacation in Sinnoh. It wasn't often that he got a chance to leave the orange islands, but with the help of Melody and Slowbro he was able to take a long awaited vacation. Part of the reason he had chosen Sinnoh was that he had heard that his young friend was journeying here, and he wanted to see him. He hadn't seen him in three years. His friend had had such a profound impact on his life, and if it wasn't for Ash, he was sure he would be have been captured or killed during that event three years ago with Lawrence III.

Disturb not the harmony of fire, ice or lightning

Lest these titans wreck destruction upon the world in which they clash

Though the water's great guardian shall rise to quell the fighting

Alone its song will fail, thus the earth shall turn to Ash

Lugia and, surely the world owed this boy their lives. Many times in fact. Lugia had heard many tales of the chosen one's exploits after he had left the orange islands.

He was flying over the beach when he noticed a figure standing still on the sand. Lugia stopped and hovered, before heading down and landing.

"Evening Mewtwo!" he greeted happily.

Mewtwo turned to look at the one who had greeted him, and was surprised (albeit pleasantly) to see Lugia before him.

"Ah... Good evening, Lugia!"

Lugia smiled.

"I must say I am surprised to see you so far away from Johto. If I may, what are you doing here? I'm on vacation myself" Lugia explained serenely.

Mewtwo closed his eyes for just a moment in thought.

"I see... I have my reasons for visiting Sinnoh. I simply must be here. It has afforded me some new experiences..." He trailed off.

Lugia frowned at the cryptic reply but brushed it off. His friend was simply like that.

"I see. Pleasant experiences I hope?"

"As it is with life, there is the pleasant mixed with the unpleasant. More than that, though... "interesting" would perhaps be the most appropriate term."

Lugia stared at him. He knew that Mewtwo wouldn't tell him anymore than that. He only talked when he was sure of something, which meant that he was feeling uncertainty about something. Lugia let it go.

"I actually came here to see Ash." he stated plainly.

That got Mewtwo's attention. His wide purple eyes opened quickly. Suddenly, he thought, his recent experiences made just a bit more sense.

"So Ash is here as well, then?" It was a simple sentence, but Mewtwo showed a great deal of thought behind his words.

Lugia frowned again. "Yes, he is. Honestly Mewtwo, I thought you would know that!" he chastised gently.

Mewtwo let the slightest hint of a smile cross his face.

"I had some suspicion, but was uncertain."

Lugia raised an 'eyebrow' at his friends declaration. He was so indirect...as usual. But Lugia was no fool. He knew something more was going on here. Perhaps more than either of them knew.

"Why don't you go and see him?" Lugia asked quietly.

"Simply put, it is unsafe. The only reason I am able to be here conversing with you is because it is night time... And therefore I am at lower risk of being seen by humans."

Lugia rolled his eyes.

"I mean at night time you dolt!" he explained teasingly.

"A safer course of action as opposed to visiting in broad daylight, to be sure... but still inadvisable." Mewtwo closed his eyes once more in thought.

Lugia stared and an irritated cross appeared on his forehead. Now he was making excuses...

"Not if you get him alone" he deadpanned.

"Do you think I would just put myself in danger? I am a legendary Pokémon too, in case you have forgotton"

"You make it difficult to forget." Mewtwo snarked back.

"If Ash were alone, then I could perhaps see him. As usual, I assume, he is traveling with friends? In that case... I may have to wait longer yet."

"And you think Ash wouldn't have told his friends about you? I'm sure the people he is with would not be a threat to you. Being who he is, Ash always forms attachments with good people".

Lugia walked forward and lay a wing over Mewtwo's shoulder.

"All you ever do when I see you is think, ponder and reflect. All the time! And you look so sad doing it! It's not good for you, my friend. I want to see you happy! You need to get outside of that head of yours and live a little!" Lugia said compassionately.

"Come see Ash with me! And before you say 'No its too dangerous' or whatever other nonsense you will spout. This is not a request!" Lugia said strongly.

Mewtwo was about to attempt to refute what Lugia had said, but he reluctantly admitted he had a point. Ash's companions were always of exemplary character. They surely would be no threat, and would understand. Mewtwo looked at Lugia.

"Very well. If we are both to see him it would be most logical that we travel together."

Again Lugia rolled his eyes.

"Logical? Is that all you have to say? We are going to see a dear friend who we haven't seen in aeons and all you can mention is logicality! Where is the excitement!? Your elation!? your zest!? You are very dull...! No wonder you're so depressed!" he said bluntly.

Mewtwo let a bit of a smirk show on his face.

"Logic IS elation for me, my friend!"

Lugia glared.

"You are honestly impossible sometimes...you know that!?" he grumbled.

For the first time in a long while, Mewtwo let out something of a laugh at Lugia's comment.

And for the first time, in a long time, the two friends shared a truly warm, happy smile

Mewtwo kept his eyes locked on Lugia's.

"Do you have any idea as to Ash's precise whereabouts?"

"I believe he's just left Canalave city after winning against Byron" he stated thoughtfully.

"He, Brock, Dawn and Pikachu will probably be camping around route 218" he said carefully.

"Really pretty scenery there too I must admit!" Lugia randomly added.

Mewtwo hadn't been expecting such a detailed answer, but he certainly wasn't going to complain.

"I see. We can leave whenever you are ready."

"I'm always ready!" Lugia sassed.

"I don't need to carry you do I? Surely, you can't keep up with my stamina. For you fly by using your psychic powers and I have wings!" he said cheekily expanding his wings to his full wingspan and flapping them to show them off.

"I do not need flight at all. For I-," Mewtwo vanished into thin air and reappeared some distance away.

"-can teleport!"

Lugia rolled his eyes.

"Showoff..." he muttered.

"I DON'T KNOW IF YOU REMEMBER OR NOT BUT WE ARE FLYING! NOT TELEPORTING!" he yelled to the still far away Mewtwo.

Mewtwo vanished and reappeared again before Lugia.

"Of course. Not all of us are gifted with the capabilities of teleportation." He said with no real trace of malice.

Lugia smiled.

"You're still a show off! Come on lets go! I'll race you to the next route!"

After there race, a race which had ended in a tie, surprisingly, even due to Mewtwo's insane speed. Lugia was flying serenely beside his friend. He was thinking about hierarchical matters. There had been some disturbance in the great realm. He didn't know why on earth Arceus let it go on, but it was time the other legendaries did something about it. "Hey Mewtwo, do you like any of the other legendaries?" he asked quietly, his eyes watching intently for Mewtwo's response.

Mewtwo pondered the question silently for a moment. He hadn't really considered his exact feelings for his fellow legendaries.

"There are none I wish to quarrel with, nor do I wish any harm to come to them. In that regard, I suppose you could say I do."

Lugia wasn't that surprised by Mewtwo's answer. Mewtwo only believed in fighting when he was protecting the ones he loved. He almost didn't tell him for he didn't want to upset his friend's peaceful ways.

"Ho-Oh and Celebi came to see me the other day with some disturbing news. Celebi told me she had overheard talk of a mutiny. She didn't hear much for the person's involved had just finished their conversation, but she could tell they were actually planning something. These person's of course are Giratina and Darkrai, which doesn't surprise me, for I guessed there would be trouble ever since they started disputing Arceus".

"And poor Arceus...he wouldn't notice if one of his plates went missing, if you get my gist!" Lugia added as an off note.

Mutiny. That was one word Mewtwo had never expected to hear from Lugia's mouth, much less in reference to the other legendary Pokémon. At the same time, he was not entirely surprised to hear that Giratina and Darkrai were possibly planning something treacherous.

"Giratina and Darkrai are collaborating, planning possible mutiny? This does not bode well."

"Indeed, it does not. If a war were to start up in the realm, who knows what would become of this world. Arceus currently keeps the balance, with Palkia, Dialga and Giratina working under him. And Pokemon like me working under them."

At this, Lugia shuddered.

"No doubt Giratina would twist the world to suit her own sadistic ways and Darkrai would no doubt feed off everyone's nightmares and misery!"

"But if a war were to start, our powers would be basically useless. Darkrai is purely dark, and our powers would be completely ineffective. Giratina, as you know, she's a ghost type, and what use is our pyschic powers against her too? This is very bad indeed, and Arceus doesn't believe any of us, He is too oblivious to see whats under his own nose. I swear the old guy is going senile!"

"It is indeed true that out powers would be ineffective against Giratina and Darkrai. We need help from the others, no doubt... It is imperative that we avoid warfare."

"Yes, but how many of them would be on our side..." whispered Lugia.

"From what Celebi and Ho-Oh told me they have supporters"

Mewtwo's violet eyes widened at this news.

"They have supporters..." He trailed off and looked back into the sky.

"Perhaps we may have need of our friend and his potential once more."

Lugia, too looked off into the distance, knowing EXACTLY who he was referring.

"Perhaps..." he echoed softly.

It was a warm starry night and the quad were currently sitting around a fireplace after just having finished dinner. Pikachu was currently in front of the three humans, attempting to act out a Pokemon, for the game was charades that they were playing.

"Snubbul!" Dawn shouted.

"Qaugsire!" Brock stated.

"Wobbafet" Ash chuckled.

"Pikachu, you look funny!" he then giggled cutely, at the funny expression Pikachu was pulling. It was hilarious!

"Pika!" Pikachu exclaimed cheerfully, indicating to Ash he had gotten it right.

Dawn sulked.

"I swear that looked like a Snubbul!" she whined.

The quad then laughed.

Suddenly, there was a huge gust of wind, and ever so quickly, two figures zoomed out of the sky and landed before them.

Dawn screamed and hid behind Brock.

Pikachu pounced forward, bearing his teeth and let sparks fly from his cheeks in a threatening manner.

Slowly the wind settled, and the quad could make out the two figures standing before them.

Pikachu's sparks settled, and his face lit up!

In front of them were two of Ash's good friends!

Lugia wore a smirk on his face.

Mewtwo's wore a plain expression.

Everyone stared at them.

"It was Lugia's idea to surprise you and I got dragged with him at the last minute" stated Mewtwo quietly, answering the silent question everyone had.

"Oh come on! It was fun!" Lugia muttered.

"You should have seen the look on your faces!" he laughed.

Mewtwo looked at him disapprovingly, while the quad finally closed their mouths from their gaping session due to their utter shock.

Then, everyone laughed..except Dawn who was still a bit alarmed, and who let out a nervous laugh instead.

Ash's humour suddenly died away as he gazed from Lugia to Mewtwo. He felt funny, almost like he was about to be tipped off his feet by something unknown at any moment.

Lugia raised his eyebrows, and looked between the two super-glued gazes.

"Mewtwo..." he said breathlessly.

Mewtwo kept his gaze firmly on Ash, whom he had not seen in so long. In an instant, he knew Ash's presence had been the reason he had not felt alone.

"Ash..." He said barely audibly.

Everyone was staring at one another, for Ash didn't say anything for a few seconds. Why did he feel kinda like bolting all of a sudden!? Mewtwo's presence had never affected him this way before. It was thankfully Lugia who broke the silence.

"It's good to see you Ash! It's been so long!" as he walked forward, and laid his head into Ash's palm for a pat. Ash smiled and stroked his head

"It's good to see you too Lugie!" he said, now scratching him behind the ear. Lugia ruffled his feathers in pleasure, and Ash laughed.

Lugia inwardly smirked. He knew.

"Mewtwo, come over here and let Ash give you a pat!" he said deviously.

Ash immediately went as red as a beetroot.

Mewtwo hesitated for a moment as well. He felt flustered, and was sure his face would have been as red as Ash's if he were human. He slowly made his way over there, his feeling of being flustered intensifying.

He stopped directly in front of Ash, and Ash reached up a hand to his cheek.

"It's good to see you" he whispered.

Mewtwo nodded.

"Indeed..."

Then he sent Ash a message telepathically:

It has been too long.

Ash couldn't agree more.

From behind them, Dawn was whispering something to Brock who was attempting to answer some of her questions. Pikachu looked back and fourth, confused. Lugia chuckled. Ash flushed again from being the subject of all this attention. He wanted to be with Mewtwo, alone. He had some things to clear up. "Would you...er...like to take a walk with me?" Ash asked Mewtwo quietly.

Mewtwo nodded.

"Certainly."

They headed away from the campsite quietly, leaving Lugia to entertain a laughing Brock, Dawn and Pikachu. The two walked in silence for what seemed like hours, until they reached the beach. A gentle breeze blew over them, and they enjoyed the tranquility for a moment. Ash was looking out to the calm sea, before he turned.

"It really is good to see you!" he stated happily.

"I had wondered how you were doing..." Ash said still smiling, though tears were suddenly gathering in the corners of his eyes.

Mewtwo turned to Ash and noticed that he seemed to be on the brink of tears. This caused him slight alarm.

"Ash! Does something trouble you?"

Ash looked at Mewtwo a moment, before giving a gentle nod, the tears he had held, now lightly trailing down his face.

"I-I was worried about you. I- Not knowing if you had been captured or killed! Or if you had found peace. It-It would have been nice to see you, or even for you to let me know you were alright somehow" he spoke softly.

Unable to stand the sight of Ash looking so heartbroken, Mewtwo let down his guard.

"I am truly sorry, Ash. I would have liked to have come and seen you. It was not for a lack of desire, I assure you. It has been difficult for me to travel without being seen by humans, and I must confess I did not know you if wanted to maintain contact with me after Mount Quena."

Ash widened his eyes at this, then with a frown, he walked forward, until he was a few inches from Mewtwo.

After all I am just a useless clone. A biological disaster that doesn't belong among Pokemon or humans. Why would he have wanted to see me again on his own terms!? To keep in touch with me almost as if we were f-

"How could you think that!?" Ash's asked, his loud hurt tone cutting through Mewtwo's thoughts.

"After all we've been through I thought we were friends!?" Ash asked in a pained, and somewhat desperate voice.

At hearing the pain in Ash's voice, Mewtwo suddenly felt very guilty.

"I-I thought"

But Mewtwo was interrupted.

"Mewtwo, after all we've been through together; saving each other, fighting side by side, and learning from each other the way we have, how could you think we could not be friends? You-You have taught me a great deal about life, as I'm sure I have taught you as well, and we both learned, and had these lessons reaffirmed together! You once told me that you would never forget me, and I must tell you that I never have forgotten you. In fact, I think about you often, and have wished to see you again because you are one of my best friends!"

Mewtwo was taken aback by Ash's heartfelt words. He considers us friends? Not just friends... But what he calls 'best' friends…?More than that… Has he truly wished to see me again?

He searched Ash's eyes, expecting this to be a trick, played on his mind by his own desires, but he could only find the truth, and a sparkling warmth in Ash's eyes that made an incredible warmth fill his heart. Finally accepting the truth, he returned Ash's smile.

Mewtwo placed a hand on Ash's shoulder.

"I have missed you too… Ash.. I should have visited you long before. I apologize."

Ash quivered due to Mewtwo's touch, and feelings of longing that he had bottled up for so long burst through his heart, and he launched himself at Mewtwo, throwing his arms around him in a loving hug, sobbing.

"I missed you so much!" he choked.

Mewtwo felt a surge of happiness flow through him, and he couldn't help but smile. Being careful not to use too much force, he too, put his arms around Ash, embracing him.

Now that Mewtwo was here, Ash didn't want to let him go, nor move out of his embrace. He wondered what this meant. Could he-? Dare he say it? Could he have feelings for Mewtwo? But Mewtwo would never ever- He had already had a hard time accepting that they were simply friends, let alone anything more... These thoughts burst through Ash's mind, overloading and painfully stinging his heart, and he couldn't help but recoiled away due to this.

As Ash recoiled, Mewtwo felt a pang of that same peculiar pain from earlier, and pondered the implications. Sadness, and longing... All effortlessly provoked in him by this boy. He certainly had strong feelings towards Ash... after what they'd been through, it was impossible otherwise. Though he now found himself questioning just how strong those feelings were...

Ash met his eyes with a new guarded, yet somewhat still happy expression before reaching up a hand to trace Mewtwo's cheek in a friendly gesture, then pull it away.

"I'm glad you're here. I really am. Thank you" he said gratefully.

Ash then turned away and looked in the direction of the camp. "We should head back to the others though, before we're missed" And with that, he turned on his heel and started walking back to the camp.

Mewtwo could plainly see that there was more going on in Ash's mind, but decided not to pry.

"Indeed."

When they arrived back at the camp, everyone was laughing at one of Lugia's stories. Ash sat down and joined in too, with a small smile on his lips. Mewtwo sat on the other side of Lugia and listened amusedly, but still feeling concerned about Ash. The group all agreed they would talk about more serious matters the next day, and agreed to go to sleep for the night. Brock got into his sleeping bag on the left hand side of the fire. Lugia curled up behind Dawn and her sleeping bag who was on the opposite side, Ash and Pikachu got into their sleeping bag which was to the front of the fire, and Mewtwo lay his back against a tree.

Ash could not sleep. His emotions were zooming about everywhere. Looking around, he checked if everyone was asleep. Yep everyone seemed to be! He then ever so quietly got up and snuck away from the camp, unaware that a certain psychic Pokemon had just only had his eyes closed. This time he headed in the direction of the river and sat on a very long log.

Ash was sitting there, pondering about all that had happened, and what he thought he felt. It wasn't the fact that he had feelings for a Pokemon that mattered. It was the fact that Mewtwo would never be able to return said feelings, and he saw him nothing more than a mere child. He had even told him what he had thought about humans himself!

You ask why I saved the humans? For our their protection. An accident would bring human rescuers. We might be discovered and our peace disrupted. You believe there is another reason? That I felt concerned? That I cared about the safety of those humans? I assure you, that is not the case. I could never feel compassion for humans.

His eyes stung. The prospect of never having his feelings returned hurt! It hurt so very badly that Ash almost wanted to run away from this place. However, he cared deeply about Mewtwo, and having his friendship was still better than nothing, so Ash reconciled himself with this fact and vowed to be as good of a friend to him as he can possibly be!

Whilst Ash was in his reverie, a Banette suddenly appeared and aimed a shadow ball at the raven-haired boy. Ash braced for impact, but the impact never came because Mewtwo, who had followed him as soon as the boy had left the camp, had stepped in. Upon sensing Banette's presence, and that the Banette was preparing an attack, His eyes had began to glow with energy and he teleported instantly between Ash and the Banette. With little more than a thought, he put up a barrier of psychic energy which absorbed the impact of the shadow ball and burst back at the attacking Pokémon, warding it off. Once Mewtwo was certain it was gone, he turned around to look at Ash.

"Are you injured?"

Ash looked up at him, eyes wide, and then flushed.

"N-No" he stuttered. Then he looked over towards where the Banette had been, still in shock at the sudden attack.

"W-Why was that Banette trying to attack me? What reason would it have to come after me?" he asked, still a bit shaken.

Mewtwo's eyes no longer glowed.

"I am not sure," he said.

I have my suspicions, however...he thought to himself.

"At any rate, that Banette should not return. Not, while I am around."

Ash looked at him, his eyes wide and surprised.

"You're planning on staying?" he asked, a little surprised, not expecting Mewtwo to have come for a long visit.

Mewtwo blinked in surprise. Had Ash thought he'd leave his side?

"Of course I am!"

He allowed himself a small smile.

Ash felt happy at the prospect that Mewtwo would want to spend more time with him, but also guilty, because he believed Mewtwo probably had better things to do than tag along with him and his companions.

"I-It's alright. You don't have to. I know you probably have a lot to do and-" but he was cut off.

If Mewtwo's hypothesis about the Banette attack was accurate, he knew it would be dangerous to let Ash out of his sight. Besides... He found himself overcome with a strong need to protect him. It wasn't a need he fully understood yet, but one he would not and could not ignore.

"Nonsense. I have nothing particularly pressing to which I must attend at the moment," he started.

Beyond ensuring your safety...he finished in his mind.

Ash blushed at the sentiment. He doubted Mewtwo understood how very intimate his sentiments spoken to him telepathically sounded.

He then smiled. Mewtwo was offering his life to protect him, and Ash finally understood WHY he felt the way he did about him. It was his desire to protect others!

"Thank you, Mewtwo" he said with a sweet smile, and genuine gratitude.

Upon hearing those words, Mewtwo felt a renewed wave of happiness wash over him. All at once, he also understood why he wanted- no- needed- to protect Ash. And in that moment, he vowed to himself to protect Ash no matter what. He nodded gently, at a shortage of words.

"Of course."

Ash gave him a smile, and stepped towards him slowly. His breath was then taken. Not being able to control himself he raised a hand to trail a finger over his eyelid.

"Purple. Your eyes are purple...and very beautiful..." he murmured softly.

Mewtwo hadn't been expecting to hear that, and wasn't entirely certain how to react. His mind had become slightly muddled and wasn't able to articulate his thoughts as well, so he settled for a simple, yet sincere,

"Thank you, Ash. That is very... kind of you."

Ash smiled and let his hand fall to his side.

"We should head back to camp now. If the others wake, they might get worried finding us gone"

Mewtwo nodded in agreement. The two walked back, and Ash got into his sleeping bag next to Pikachu. Mewtwo was at his side.

"Goodnight Ash. Sleep well." he said gently. He was about to turn, but a hand grabbed him.

"Wait! Would you...would you stay by my side? I-I would feel safer" he asked in a small voice, his face very red.

Mewtwo's heart was warmed by his comment and his reply was nearly instant.

"Yes. Certainly."

The morning sunlight warmly caressed Ash's sleeping features, and he stirred slightly, before his eyelashes slowly fluttered. Yawning silently, Ash stretched, before turning to look at Mewtwo. He was asleep this time, and Ash thought that he had never seen him look so peaceful... or so beautiful. Sure, he didn't like the fact that those gorgeous violet eyes were concealed from him, but he would not complain waking to a pleasing sight!

Ash contemplated all that had happened between himself and Mewtwo so far, and he shivered, not with fear, but with the powerful surge of emotion he felt whenever he thought of him. He NOW understood why the Pokémon had never left his mind. He was in LOVE? Yes, he knew it. He would have never of guessed it would have happened between him and Mewtwo of all people! But Ash knew you can not help who you love. And what was not to love about him? He was compassionate, intelligent, brave, loyal, sweet and supportive. Ash smiled. Yes, they were all the right reasons to love someone.

Still he was still thrown from all the sudden feelings and events. He needed to talk to someone. He could talk to Brock, but he wanted to talk to Gary and Misty as well, and ask their opinions on the matter. Surely, they would all have good advice!

Mewtwo's eyes slowly opened and Ash met his gaze and smiled.

"You stayed!" he said smiling, still finding it a little unreal that he had Mewtwo by his side after so long. He didn't know why he still found it so surprising that Mewtwo would stay with him. Perhaps it was his long absence or the fear, that in essence he would leave HIM again, even if he didn't mean to.

Mewtwo blinked a few times, in both confusion and drowsiness.

Did he suspect I would leave...? he thought. The question of whether Ash suspected he would leave his side was somewhat painful to consider.

"Of course, Ash." He paused.

"Did you sleep well?" he then asked politely.

"Yeah." said Ash smiling as he raised a hand to brush away his messy ebony locks.

"How about you?" he asked gently.

Mewtwo gave a slight nod.

"Yes. I believe so."

He looked around and noted how bright it had already gotten.

Dawn groaned from the opposite side of the fire and smacked a hand to her forehead. Lugia too, awoke and opened his jaw in a yawn. Footfalls could be heard and they all turned to see Brock carrying some water that he had collected from the stream that he would use to make breakfast. Pikachu was smiling beside him, obviously having awoken early and had gone with him.

"Morning sleepyheads!" he greeted cheerfully.

"Pika!" Pikachu greeted.

Everyone greeted him back, and then got up to prepare for the day. After eating breakfast and thanking Brock, the group were all sitting on logs facing each other.

"So what was it you wanted to tell us guys?" Ash asked Lugia and Mewtwo seriously.

Lugia looked to Mewtwo and sighed.

"You explain" he said simply, having explained it once already, and not wanting to again be the bearer of bad news.

Mewtwo did not want to be the one to deliver bad news either, though it appeared as though he had little choice. He closed his eyes and began to speak.

"To be blunt... It would seem that some of the other legendary Pokémon are planning a mutiny. They have supporters and Lugia and I alone are insufficient to stop them. Our powers would do little good against them. Giratina and Darkrai are among them."

"We cannot be sure yet exactly who is among the supporters of the mutiny and who is not. It would seem that... Perhaps we may be in need of assistance."

Ash's eyes widened, and he could feel his heart growing colder as Mewtwo went on. A war! A war within the Pokémon realm would tear world or even the universe as they knew it apart! Previous experiences had taught him long ago how important maintaining a certain balance was! And this was reconfirmed time and time again in each of his journeys!

"No...this can't be..." he trailed.

"Giratina...Darkrai...I helped them not long ago..." he said, his voice heavy with shock, and worry.

Mewtwo could hear the shock and hurt in Ash's voice, and could sense the emotions within him, as well. He didn't dare open his eyes, for he could not bear to see the expression that would surely match those emotions.

"Indeed... They must be stopped. If we are to avoid catastrophe, we must end this mutiny before it has a chance to begin."

"Mewtwo..." he trailed, feeling hurt at hearing the uncertainty in the normally confident being.

Lugia looked between them and then to Brock, Dawn and Pikachu's faces who like Ash, were wearing a horrified expression. Lugia gazed at them sadly. Ash now understood why that Banette had probably attacked him. The legendary ghost Pokémon had probably ordered it to assassinate him. He looked to Mewtwo who still had his eyes closed in what Ash thought was pain and fear. It stung his heart and he wanted it to go away! He wanted his friends to live in a happy world! And not one filled with despair-the world which Darkrai and Giratina were surely to create. He would do whatever it took to protect the world that they currently lived in. Instead of feeling fear, a powerful surge of courage welled within his heart. He stood and walked over to Mewtwo, and gently placed his hand over his knuckles.

"I will help you. I will do whatever it takes to ensure that they do not get their way! My life even!" he vowed strongly.

Ash's courage and vow cut through Mewtwo like a knife. But this time, in a good way. Any feelings of doubt or pain left as quickly as they'd arrived. Mewtwo opened his violet eyes and looked intensely at Ash.

"Let us hope it does not come down to costing your life. As long as you and your companions are on our side... I believe we may have a chance at foiling their plans." Mewtwo spoke a little more softly.

"Thank you."

Ash smiled and gave his hand a reassuring squeeze.

He turned to Lugia and gave him a pat on the head.

"It will be okay Lugie" he whispered softly.

Lugia nuzzled his hand.

"Thank you Ash" he whispered back in gratitude. Ash then turned to the others.

"Guys, I wont ask you to-" but he was cut off by Dawn.

"Oh Ash! You know we are going with you! Isn't that right Brock?" Dawn asked determinedly.

Brock nodded.

"That's right Dawn! Friends stick together always!".

"PIKA!" Pikachu yelled in enthusiasm. Ash's eyes watered. He had the best friends ever!

"Guys-" he choked, at a loss for words.

Pikachu jumped into his arms and Brock and Dawn came up on either side of him and both laid a hand on his shoulder.

"We're with you Ash!" Dawn affirmed.

"To the end buddy" Brock said strongly.

"Pika!" Pikachu echoed in agreement.

Tears trailed down Ash's face, and then he turned around and embraced both of his friends.

"Thank you guys...so much" he whispered in very deep gratitude.

The four friends smiled, enjoying their moment of true strength.

Mewtwo's heart was warmed by the display of friendship before him. He felt truly glad that Ash had made such good friends, ones he knew would always be there when he needed them. There was absolutely no doubt in mind that Ash was in good hands with them around. He only hoped he would be able to protect them from danger. He telepathically communicated with Ash.

I shall be at your side. I will protect you and your companions to the best of my ability.

Ash's heart skipped a beat at Mewtwo's words but he smiled nonetheless.

"Thank you, Mewtwo" he said in gratitude.

Mewtwo nodded and they shared a smile.

It seemed as though almost no time had passed, but the fact that the sun was now quite high in the sky proved otherwise. While everyone else had fun together, Mewtwo had decided to go for a walk by himself, to think and meditate.

He thought about several things; The mutiny that Giratina and Darkrai were apparently planning. Who the most likely candidates to support the mutiny would be, and who would most likely be against it. He thought about how to stop the mutiny, why Giratina and Darkrai would even want to do such a thing in the first place. When Mewtwo found no answers, he turned his thoughts to his friends; to Ash, Lugia, and the rest. He thought about how loyal they all were... He felt he didn't deserve to know the joys of such strong companionship. He thought about Ash. And his feelings for Ash. When he observed how his friends acted towards him, he could tell there was a certain difference, one that was not simply because they were two different species. Mewtwo noted the strength of his feelings... They seemed inordinately so compared to the others. He briefly wondered if this was what humans called "love"... A "love" apart from familial bonds or mere friendship.

"Love..." He thought aloud.

"Yes, this could be..."

With that, he turned to walk back towards the others.

At least, he started to. Almost as soon as his back was turned, he sensed something appear behind him... many somethings, in fact. He turned quickly to see not simply one Banette, but several. His eyes began to glow. He prepared to raise a psychic barrier like he had the previous night defending Ash, but he was not able to, in time to stop all of the incoming Shadow Balls. Most were deflected with explosive force, but one managed to make direct contact. While it did not seriously affect Mewtwo, he still found himself wracked with pain for a few moments before focusing his mind enough to stop a second incoming Shadow Ball, which dispatched the last Banette. He knelt for just a moment to recollect himself before continuing on his way. He could not decide whether to inform the others of the attack.

The group back at the camp were packing for the journey they would take to the Hall of Origin, where they all agreed would be the first place to begin gathering evidence against Giratina and Darkrai to present to Arceus, Palkia and Dialga.

Ash had just finished packing and was about to ask if anyone else needed any help when Mewtwo came walking back to the camp. At first everything seemed normal, but it wasn't until Ash noticed a wound on his collarbone that was weeping blood.

Ash quickly grabbed a hyper potion, a full heal and a scanning device from his bag and rushed over to him.

"Sit down!" he said quickly as he sat Mewtwo down on an old tree stump.

He ran the medical scanner over the wound and after about ten seconds it beeped and he read the results.

"You've been affected with a heal block attack. That is why you can't use recover. But this full heal and hyper potion should fix you up." he said, trying to be reassuring and comforting.

He gently cleaned the wound with some saline and towlettes, and then asked Mewtwo to swallow the liquid within the full heal bottle. He then sprayed the wound with the hyper potion, and when it was healed, he sprayed the rest everywhere else on Mewtwo's body to rejuvenate him.

"The heal block should wear off in a few hours. Then you can use recover again".

After quickly shoving everything into his bag, Ash went back to Mewtwo and cupped his hands on either side of Mewtwo's face, moving himself closer to him. His feelings were of such a high level of concern, he didn't even realise the intimacy of the gesture. He gently caressed his cheeks

"What happened?" he whispered softly.

Mewtwo didn't realize he had even been wounded until Ash pointed it out and healed it. He cursed himself for not being more careful... for making Ash worry. The intimacy of Ash's gesture was not lost on him, and he felt... strange. He didn't mind that it was so intimate. He honestly didn't care. In fact... He didn't want Ash to leave. Didn't want him to back away. He closed his eyes, realizing he had no choice but to tell him.

"As I began to return, a swarm of Banette appeared and attacked me. I find it difficult to believe this could possibly be random. Giratina must have sent them, as well. Particularly knowing that ghost-type Pokémon are effective at combating psychic-types... I had very little time to defend myself. I was able to deflect most of their attacks, but one Shadow Ball got through. I did not even notice I was visibly wounded."

As Mewtwo told him this, Ash's eyes darkened.

"We have to stop them! Before they hurt not only you" at this he trailed his hand down to his collarbone,

"but the whole world!"

Mewtwo put a hand on Ash's shoulder.

"As long as you and your companions remain safe... I would have willingly taken all of those attacks without complaint. We WILL stop their plans... Ash." Mewtwo spoke his name softly.

Ash felt incredibly warmed by Mewtwo's words and he felt like he needed to say something.

"Mewtwo I really-" but he was interrupted by Dawn, Brock, Pikachu and Lugia walking over to them.

"Are you guys alright?" Dawn asked, concern flashing in her eyes.

Mewtwo nodded, as did Ash who also smiled back at her, and everyone.

"Yeah. Mewtwo just had a scrape with some Banette. He's okay now. I promise guys, that once we get to the hall of origin, all this mess will be dealt with!" he asserted confidently, in an attempt to free his friends of as much worry as possible.

They all smiled at Ash's confidence, and nodded and smiled.

"Yeah, we'll get to the bottom of this together!"

Mewtwo was eager to hear what Ash was about to say, and was quite disappointed when he was interrupted. He stood and looked at everybody.

"Indeed. I do not believe these will be the last of the attacks. We should arrive at the Hall of Origin as quickly as possible. We will surely be able to accomplish our mission."

The six of them agreed that they now would head off to the Hall of Origin. Brock was seated on Lugia with Pikachu in front of him. Dawn was behind him, holding onto his back for dear life, her doe wide eyes looking around her fearfully, and they hadn't even taken off yet.

"Dawn you're crushing me!" Brock reprimanded breathlessly.

Dawn whimpered. and lowered her hands, her grip a little looser but not by much.

Brock sighed.

Alright he thought. He would accept it.

Pikachu was grinning.

And Lugia chuckled, deeply amused.

Ash watched the quad interact and he chuckled lightly.

"Those guys...!" he murmured in good humor.

He had flown on Lugia when he had been twelve and it had been one of the most unforgettable experiences of his life! Those guys were in for a real treat! Now for him to make another unforgettable experience! One he would never ever forget even if he took an amnesia attack! Brown amorous eyes turned on Mewtwo, who was gazing off into the distance, deep in thought.

Ash sighed. He didn't like the far away, worried look in his friends eyes. He would take his mind away from whatever he was thinking for the moment.

Smiling gently, Ash slowly walked up to Mewtwo and stopped a few inches before him.

"May I ride with YOU?" he asked, the last word ever so slightly emphasised, and his voice having a sensual tone to it.

Mewtwo hadn't even realized he was staring off into the distance with such intensity. His incredible mind was working a mile a minute trying to make sense of all that had happened, and trying to plan ahead. It wasn't going well. His focus was finally broken when he heard Ash's voice. Mewtwo caught the emphasis Ash employed and looked into those large brown eyes, nodding slightly.

"Certainly."

Ash smiled and then blushed. How was this going to work exactly?

"Erm..how- how should I-um-Do I?" he stuttered.

Mewtwo looked away, and he felt slightly awkward about what he was about to suggest.

He held out his hand.

"Take my hand. I can transport us across the land nearly as rapidly as Lugia.

Ash's eyes widened slightly and he looked down at the offered hand. He finally took it and smiled.

"Sure" he said, smiling gently.

With that, Lugia flapped his strong wings and took off into the air, soaring gracefully. Once Lugia was in the air, Mewtwo's eyes began to glow. He and Ash rose gently into the air and rose at an even rate. They all, then took off, heading in the direction of the Hall of Origin.

The sky was clear and bright, without a cloud in sight. Below were forests with their trees, tall and green, and rivers, low and varying in speed. Still in the distance was Mount Coronet, Imposing, yet beautiful, with clouds gracefully accenting its majesty. But the mountain's beauty could not and would not distract them from the task at hand. There was little time to admire it.

Even as Mewtwo was focusing on flight and delivering he and Ash to the Hall of Origin safely, he was planning what to do from there. What sort of evidence should they be looking for? What will they be likely to find? What will they say to Arceus... And what will convince him? It didn't seem likely that Arceus would accept easily that some of the legendary Pokemon would want to plan mutiny. Solid proof would be necessary.

Yet even as all this weighed on his incredible mind, Mewtwo was keenly aware of Ash, whose hand he was gripping. Whenever the two were in direct contact, all of Mewtwo's emotions regarding Ash seemed to intensify. He found it intriguing, and he again entertained the possibility of being in love. In fact, he found it would sometimes interrupt his train of thought.

On arrival at the hall of Origin, the group on Lugia's back hopped off, and Lugia folded his wings back into his body.

"I AM SO GLAD THAT'S OVER!" Dawn exclaimed loudly, sighing in happy relief to feel the ground underneath her feet. Brock shook his head, and Pikachu and Lugia looked at eachother and laughed.

"Sorry Dawn" Lugia said apologetically.

"AND IT WAS YOUR FAULT LUGIA! YOU MADE SURE TO FLY AS FAST AS YOU COULD! AND THEN DO RANDOM TWIRLS IN THE AIR! I NEARLY DIED!" she screeched.

Lugia winced.

"Maybe it was a bit much..." Lugia said, a tone of both amusement and regret in his voice.

"A BIT MUCH!?" Dawn let out a breath.

"Yeah, well as long as the trip is a bit smoother next time!", She seemed to have forgiven him.

Ash and Mewtwo landed gently, and shared a small smile between them, at their friend's amusing behavior. The other four turned to them and smiled, glad they, they too had arrived safely.

They then summoned all their Pokemon, anticipating an impending fight.

"Piplup! Buneary! Pachirisu! Piloswine! Quilava! Togekiss!" Dawn called, summoning her Pokemon in front of her.

"Steelix! Geodude! Marshtomp! Forretress! Sudowoodo! Ludicolo!" Brock called, he too, summoning his Pokemon in front of them.

Ash nodded and turned his hat.

"Pikachu! Grotle! Staravia! Gligar! Buizel! Bulbasaur!" Ash called, red flashes erupting around him, and his Pokemon taking form before him, except for Pikachu who was already by his side.

"PIKA!" Pikachu roared, as did the other Pokemon in unison.

Ash turned to everyone.

"Ready?" he asked. Everyone nodded.

"READY!" they exclaimed with determined expressions.

Lugia roared his famous sea cry.

Mewtwo simply nodded, but his eyes glowed blue momentarily.

Ash nodded and led the way into the entrance leading into the aisle of the hall of origin. There were some paths leading off into other ruins, and he knew they all needed to be searched for clues that could be used as evidence against Darkrai and Giratina.

Brock and Dawn stopped behind Ash. Lugia and Mewtwo and their Pokemon were at their side.

"I say we split up into pairs and search. That way we can cover more ground, and it will be safer than splitting up alone" Brock offered wisely.

Ash and Dawn nodded in agreement.

"Brock, our Pokemon and I will search that pathway over there!" Dawn pointed to the pathway behind her. Ash nodded.

"Pika pi Pikachu!" Pikachu insisted, which Lugia confirmed meant that he and Pikachu would check the pathway in front of them.

Ash again nodded.

"Then, Mewtwo, my Pokemon, and I will search that pathay over there!" he said, pointing to a pathway that veered off to the left. He locked eyes with Mewtwo in a silent question and he nodded.

Ash and Mewtwo were walking quietly down the pathway, their keen eyes looking for any sign of anything off. There was nothing for a few hundred metes until they saw a thicket of trees and bushes covering a rock in face. They could feel a slight breeze blowing on their face, and assumed something could be behind the foliage. Ash ordered his Grotle and Bulbasaur to use cut and Mewtwo helped by attempting to move the foliage with his psychic powers. It took a few minutes and was very hard to clear. What the hell was this stuff! On uncovering the rock face they saw a blue and black swirling portal in front of them. "What IS that!?" Ash exclaimed in alarm.

Mewtwo looked at it critically, and approached it carefully, Ash following behind him and telling him to be careful.

"I don't know" he murmured quietly.

Sounds were coming from the portal that sounded like a strong wind was blowing through. and the breeze was caressing their face before now blew strongly! Suddenly a black shadow emerged, it stopped and looked at them with white pitted eyes and smiled evilly. There was a pause for a moment, then suddenly it zoomed into Ash. Ash dropped to the floor, and clutched his head, as he screamed in agony.

"Arghhh!" he screamed, as he started thrashing from side to side on the floor, his nose now spluttered with blood.

Brock and Dawn where on their way back from the end of their pathway, having found nothing, not even a speck out of place!

"Bummer!" Dawn exclaimed dissapointed.

"I was sure we would find something!" she said sadly.

"Don't worry Dawn. I'm sure the others will find something!" Brock offered her in comfort as he rubbed her shoulders.

Dawn sighed, and leaned into Brocks chest.

As they neared the place they had started off at, a green portal popped open and out zoomed Celebi! Dawn screeched in alarm.

Brock held her and patted her shoulder gently.

"It's alright!" he said comfortingly.

"She won't hurt us!" he assured kindly.

"Hello Celebi" he greeted happily.

"It's been a while!"

Celebi nodded and fluttered around in agreement.

"Bi! Bi! Celebi! Bi!" it said urgently.

Brock and Dawn stared.

They could not understand her. Celebi sighed.

"CELEBI!" it called at the top of its lungs and out of the portal stepped, to the groups intesne surprise, Jessie, James and meowth.

Everyone stared.

"Who are all of you?" Jessie exclaimed surprised.

"Umm...?" Brock and Dawn both exclaimed in confusion.

"Celebi! Cele-biiiiiiiiii!" Celebi told them all.

"What do you mean you have brought us to the future!?" Meowth exclaimed in alarm.

Brock sighed. Now he understood.

"That is EXACTLY what she means." Brock stated.

"This is Celebi. She's a legendary Pokemon, and is in charge of time. She has obviously brought you here for a reason. One of them being Meowth as he can translate" Brock deduced.

"What do you mean? Why? Why would I help you? Are we friends?" Meowth asked.

Brock thought for a moment. He didn't want to make this harder.

"Yes" he lied quickly.

"Brock-" Dawn warned.

"Be quiet Dawn!"

Dawn sighed.

The group looked at each other distrustfully, while Celebi zoomed around and explained stuff to Meowth.

"Fine" he agreed reluctantly. He would help, but he just knew something about these twerps irked him!

"Celebi says that Giratina has opened a portal to the shadow world. She says that this portal has been leaking shades for several weeks! Shades have the ability to posess people and Celebi says that the shades have -WHAT!?" he asked in fear.

Brock and Dawn flinshed at his fearful outburst.

"Meowth? What is it!?"

Meowth looked at them, fear very apparent in his eyes.

"These shades have already taken possession of some world leaders and-" he paused.

"the events have already been set in motion. No one can stop it. You're too late!"

"TOO LATE FOR WHAT!?" Dawn screeched.

"The purification has began!"

Lugia and Pikachu too arrived back from their path, having found nothing, but a dark purple glwoing crystal which Lugia levitated with his psychic atack, not chancing any of them touching it.

They arrived back to greet Dawn. Brock and their Pokemon, and to their surprise, Celebi and Team Rocket.

"PIKA! PIKACHU!" Pikachu yelled at them accusingly, which translated to 'I knew you'd have something to do with this!'

Lugia stared at Pikachu, and looked back to Team Rocket.

"Calm down Pikachu!" said Brock.

"They are helping" he informed gently.

Pikachu huffed and turned his head.

"Chu!" it muttered angrily.

"I remember you" said Lugia thoughtfully.

"You are actually not bad guys" he said as a way of an unusal greeting.

Mewtwo turned around quickly to look at Ash, his lilac eyes widened with something resembling panic. Whatever had entered Ash, he had a feeling his psychic powers would have little effect directly. He had a good idea now what it was, where it led, and how it got there. His eyes glowed brightly and he began to assault the portal with overwhelming amounts of energy, attempting to disrupt it enough so that it would collapse. The portal was much stronger than Mewtwo had anticipated, and took quite a bit longer to finally waver than he had estimated. Each passing moment make it harder and harder to ignore Ash's distress, but even with his mind, he did not know another way. With a final focused, concentrated blast of energy, the portal disappeared, far more peacefully than one might expect from a portal that, if Mewtwo was correct, led to the Distortion World.

The shade emerged from Ash, having had a difficult time possessing him. It's silhouette glitched for a second like static on a tv and it disappeared to go and posses the next human it saw.. Even though the portal had been interrupted by Mewtwo it would soon open again with a far more greater ferocity of powerful and when that occurred he would not be able to stop it. Ash's nose, eyes and ears were leaking blood. Normally the shade would just be able to possess someone without any symptoms, but Ash's fight had wreaked havoc in his brain. He was now in a coma...

Mewtwo ran to Ash, noticing the blood. Anger at the shade flared within him, threatening to boil within him. Mewtwo employed his ability to sense nearby life presences, and noticed that Ash's seemed to be fading, slowly but fading still. There was no time to stop and assess the situation. He needed to alert the others and find someone who could help Ash. Mewtwo picked up Ash and carried him bridal-style, gliding rapidly through the air searching for Lugia, for Brock, for Dawn, for any of Ash's friends.

Mewtwo teleported Ash back to their starting place in the hope of finding someone, and to his relief, all of his friends were there. And Celebi? And Team Rocket?

"ASH!" Dawn cried running over to him.

"ASH!" Brock echoed as he too ran over.

"Pikapi!" screeched Pikachu, as he followed suit.

Mewtwo backed away, as his friends hovered over him. He was at a loss of what to do. He felt alkmost like he shouldn't be near Ash. How could he have LET this happen to him. He HAD FAILED him! Painful memories of when His and Metwo's attacks had collided and turned Ash to stone so many years ago flashed before him. The Pokemon's tears had saved him. Maybe if he cried...

Tears trailed down his face, and sprinkled in the breeze towards Ash. Pikachu and Dawn were crying over him. Brock's face looked grave. He didn't wake up!

Jessie had done training as a nurse before joining Team Rocket and she checked his vital signs. The bleeding had stopped, but he was still out of it.

"He is in a stable condition, but, he is in a coma. He might wake tomorrow, next week, in a few months or years. He-He might never wake. I'm so sorry" she said sadly.

James and Mew looked sad. Lugia was crying silently.

Dawn and Pikachu were now sobbing. Brock, too, now had tears trailing down his face.

Mewtwo felt a rush of painful and heartrending emotions gripping him. Anguish and grief, guilt and shame. No matter how Mewtwo looked at the situation, it was all his fault. He should have disabled the portal the moment he laid eyes on it. He should have worked more quickly. He should have protected Ash from the shade. How, he didn't know. He couldn't come up with a way he could have done any of that. Yet he still blamed himself. And now, Ash, his ally, his friend... Someone he had come to care greatly for... Someone he had perhaps even come to love. Ash might be beyond his reach. Beyond anyone's. His tears flowed more heavily now as the situation's gravity weighed on him.

Meanwhile, Ash's consciousness was floating in a world of reds, blacks and purples.

"What happened!?" he asked himself, feeling slightly fuzzy.

"Where am I!?" he asked in awe.

"You should know little Ketchum!" said an icy, female voice behind him. Ash whirled around and came face to face with Giratina.

"Giratina!" he exclaimed, his eyes narrowing.

"I am in- I am in the distortion world!"

"You are correct little one!"

"Why are you doing this Giratina!? I saved you remember!?"

"And I remain grateful" said Giratina.

"But you are in my way Ash! I am sick and tired of being Arceus' slave! This world he created is dull! Arceus and other Pokemon have the power to control the world, yet the fools don't use it! It is a miserable excuse of a world! I have new plans for this place! Those who are with me will be spared and even offered high-ranking positions! Those unfortunate fools that defy me will be obliterated! You have a choice Ash! Join me, and you and your family and friends will be saved! Even rewarded! Deny me and you WILL die!"

Ash's eyes narrowed.

"NEVER!" he yelled defiantly.

"I have a good idea of what your plans will entail Giratina and you should know I would never support such desolation! I will fight to stop you with every fibre of my being! And if I have to give my life in the process, so be it!"

Giratina laughed and then glared.

"You're a fool Ketchum! If you want to die for those fools, be my guest, for you WILL die here. Alone and in agony. You can not stop what has began. No one can!"

And before Giratina left, she turned back again.

"Oh and Ash? Know that Mewtwo will join my causalities in my hellish world. I shall have great fun terrorising him!"

Ash gritted his teeth.

"OVER MY DEAD BODY!"

Giratina cackled.

"That IS the point dear Ketchum and more!" and with a swirl of vibrant red and orange she dissapeared, leaving Ash worried and trapped inside his own mind and this hellish dimension.

It physically pained Mewtwo to do so, but he gently laid Ash down on the ground and knelt next to him. A single idea had come to his mind, and he would be damned if he didn't try it. If he could heal his own wounds in battle, it made sense that if he modified his technique, he should be able to heal others as well. He thought to himself.

"Perhaps... Perhaps if I am able to repair any traces of damage within his body, he shall stand a better chance... And if not, then perhaps any pain he may feel might at least subside... It is the least I can do, considering what I have done..." Mewtwo closed his eyes and focused intensely, and Ash's body became enveloped in a gentle light.

"I am attempting to heal whatever damage I am able to... If I am able to."

His voice wavered on the last line, wavered with uncertainty and guilt.

Mewtwo's attempts to bring him out of his state were futile. He did however heal the tissue damage surrounding his frontal lobe and cranial fissure, but it had no affect on Ash's spirit which was separated from his body and trapped in the dispersion world.

Fuming, Ash walked around the world of reds and indigos. The world seemed to go on forever and ever! Would he be stuck here for all eternity!?

Back where his physical body lay, Mewtwo felt despair settle deep within his heart when he didn't wake. His despair got worse as the hopeful look on his friend's faces dropped as he failed in bringing Ash back.

This despair caused a red aura to grow around him, and the aura took form of around twenty of Banette!

Lugia stared horrified.

"Mewtwo, your despair has taken a physical form!" he screamed over to him.

"What awesome power! I've never seen anything like it!"

A red glow surrounded the others as well and more Pokemon took form. By the time the had finished forming there were hundred's of ghost type and dark type Pokemon!

A high pitched chilling laugh surrounded them, the group shuddered, and soon Giratina and Darkrai appeared.

The group stared horrified.

Giratina chuckled, amused.

Darkrai had a more serious expression on his face.

"Give me the Stygian stone Lugia!" he ordered.

Mewtwo no longer held back. The appearance of Giratina and Darkrai not only confirmed his suspicions, but he realized just what had become of Ash's conscience. His anger... no. His FURY, exploded within him. He had never been this infuriated in his entire life. Not even when... he forced that memory from his mind. Mewtwo was struggling to maintain control. A huge outpouring of psychic energy enhanced the appearance of the red aura surrounding him, making it look almost like flames. His eyes glowed brightly as well, drawing attention to the expression of single-minded lividity he wore on his face. His mind began rapidly working to determine how to rescue Ash's conscience. He feared, though, that he would not be able to do much in the Distortion World. It was, after all, under Giratina's control. And his powers would do little against Giratina...

Darkrai noticed that Lugia was not obeying his command and he ordered him once more.

"I SAID give me the Stygian Stone, Lugia!" he repeated in barely controlled fury.

Meanwhile Ash was STILL walking through the distortion world. He soon realised that walking anywhere was pointless! He collapsed on the ground and put his face in his hands.

"Man, how the hell do I get outta here!?" he exclaimed in exhaustion.

He was worried about his friends, and he was worried about Mewtwo, particularly with how Giratina had threatened him!

I love you, Mewtwo! he thought desperately

"I love you!"

Unknown to Ash, this thought seemed to be transferred across time and space to a certain psychic being's head!

Lugia shouted back, nearly as much fury in his voice as there was energy pouring from Mewtwo.

"No! I'd never give it up to the likes of you!"

Darkrai laughed cruelly.

"The boy is gone. His consciousness has been captured, he is trapped within the Distortion World. You truly wish death not only on yourself, but on your pitiful companions?!"

Giratina spoke up.

"Do you REALLY believe you can stop us? That you can protect your little friends? Have you forgotten your typing, Lugia? Mewtwo? Your powers have almost no effect on either of us. How do you intend to defeat us with such meager strength? And suppose you did. Suppose you did manage the impossible. The Distortion world is MY realm. Under MY control. How can you possibly hope to rescue the boy's soul?"

Lugia was silent for a moment, but shot daggers at the two of them with his glare. He couldn't deny that Darkrai and Giratina had a point. But he still couldn't give in. Not as long as he drew breath.

"I said, NO! Nothing you say can make me hand over the Stygian Stone!" He roared defiantly.

Mewtwo remained silent. He feared that if he even thought about saying anything, any semblance of self-control he still possessed would be lost and he would fly into a blind rage. Who knows what could happen then. He found himself searching, desperately searching, for some trace of Ash's consciousness. He hoped the link they shared was not severed. Just when it seemed like all hope had been lost, something hit Mewtwo like a freight train. It was a thought. A desperate thought that reverberated in his mind.

I love you, Mewtwo!

"..."

Mewtwo became cloaked in psychic energy, but also in something else. A volatile energy entirely unknown to him.

He charged.

Ash was still sitting there, at a loss of what to do. Suddenly, a pink portal opened and through it popped Mew and Cresselia.

"Mew! Cresselia!" Ash exclaimed in surprise, and in relief that there were other living beings finally with him.

Not much time had past in earth time, but it had been four days in the distortion world.

"ASH!" Cresselia greeted.

"Mew!" Mew greeted.

"Are you alright?" Cresselia and Mew asked at the same time.

Ash nodded.

Cresselia smiled.

"We came here when the portal reopened and to put it simply we are now stuck here too. But, we have come here to unveil the gate of Oriasis which is around here somewhere!"

Focusing her powers, Cresselia unleashed a wave of psychic power, and a golden arch appeared, It looked like an illusion taking form, but it was real.

"WHAT is that!?" Ash exclaimed in awe.

"That is the gate of Oriasis. The source of power for the shades. I discovered it a little over a week ago. But haven't figured out how to destroy it. But then you arrived and I hoped we'd have better luck this time! I may be a psychic type and ineffective against Giratina and Darkrai and their hoard of Pokemon and Shades, but I am still part of the legendary duo with Darkrai. He is after all my brother, and I won't stand for his treachery!"

Ash smiled.

"It must be hard for you to fight your family"

"I LOVE my brother. Even with his personality flaws, he'll always be my brother! But I can not just stand by and let him murder innocent people! You should know that Ash!"

Ash smiled.

"I know. Thank you, Cresselia"

Cresselia nodded.

"Mew left the Stygian stone for Lugia and Pikachu. I don't know much about it, but Darkrai fears it so! Hopefully they can use it to aid them"

She knew Ash's friends were in battle. but she didn't want to worry Ash. He needed to focus on the task of destroying the Orisian Gate.

Ash walked forward and reached out a hand and touched the gate, he was flown back.

"OW!" he muttered, rubbing his shoulder.

Cresselia and Mew rushed to him, asking him if he was alright, which he confirmed he was.

Suddenly the gate glowed an intense gold, light illuminating it brightly. Eyes appeared on the curve of the arch and looked at them sternly.

"Who disturbs my slumber?" it asked in a deep voice.

"My name is Ash" Ash answered hesitantly.

"Ash!" it echoed

Ash nodded.

"You must be the one!" the gate mused thoughtfully.

"The one?" Ash asked.

"Aww not again...!" he groaned.

Cresselia and Lugia chuckled.

Even Oriasis found his comment amusing.

"Yes, the one!"

"What are you?" Ash asked.

"Are you a Pokemon?"

The Orisian Gate looked at him and frowned.

"No, I am not a Pokemon! I am a man!"

The trio looked at him, as if he was stupid.

Oriasis rolled is eyes.

"A dead man now. But, when I was alive I crafted this gate and bound my spirit to it. My ghost now lives within it!"

Ash looked at him. "Then, why are you helping Giratina destroy the world?"

"I'm not!" Oriasis immediately said.

"Giratina has managed to harness my power and create shades to posess humankind. I can not stop her, only the chosen one can disable my power!"

Ash stared at him.

Cresselia and Mew looked on.

Oriasis sighed.

"I was one of the first men that Arceus created. One of the first women who were created was my wife, Stygia. I had the power to read minds and of telekinesis. My wife had a cunning and somewhat devious mind, and could bring about night from the day. As you have probably guessed. I was a psychic human, while my dear Stygia was dark. One time, a fight broke out between Stygia and I, and she threatened to leave me. She had planned behind Arceus and my back to do so, for she was not really allowed to part with me. It was very different at the beginning. However, despite this I loved her with all my heart and pleaded with her not to leave. She saw that I loved her and her eyes softened and she told me she loved me too and that she was sorry. To prevent further actions of her deviance she created the Stygian Stone which would surpress her dark desires and keep her with me. In essence fighting her dark side, and allowing her love for me to dominate! The Stygian Stone has the power to completely subdue dark type Pokemon. In fact it reverses type effectiveness! Our children were the first Psychic and dark type Pokemon. You, my dear, Mew and Cresselia are my descendants"

Ash eyes softened. He hoped that wherever his friends were that they could awaken the Stygian Stone's powers. He thought about his new-found love for Mewtwo and the love he had for his friends and human kind!

In a kind of a trance he walked forward and touched Oriasis.

There was an intense flash and then it was gone.

Ash shook his head and looked dazed.

"What happened?" Ash asked blankly.

"YOU DID IT!" Oriasis cheered.

"You disabled Giratina's curse on me! I can feel all my power returning! The psychic power that was used to create the shades!" he exclaimed happily.

Ash, Mew and Cresselia beamed.

"It was the love you had inside you, Ash. Your love disabled Giratina's curse!" Cresselia enthused ecstatically.

"Mew Mew!" Mew cheered.

Ash blushed and rubbed his head.

"It was nothing..."

They all laughed.

"As usual it is nothing when you save the whole world!" Cresselia replied in amusement.

"I concur!" said Oriasis.

Ash blushed deeply.

He then turned to Oriasis.

"How do we get outta here?" he asked.

"Not too fear my boy! I can deal with that!"

Using his psychic powers, Oriasis transported them to the end of the hall of Origin where Arceus slept.

Lugia couldn't believe what he was witnessing. It defied everything that he knew. Mewtwo's attacks shouldn't have had any effect. They shouldn't have left a scratch.

Yet what was happening was the exact opposite.

Darkrai and Giratina scrambled to do something in order to defend themselves from Mewtwo's enraged onslaught of psychic attacks, but to no avail. Where ordinarily his attacks would not have reached them, it was now THEIR attacks not reaching HIM. The two were genuinely horrified, realizing this might be thanks to the power of the stone.

Lugia knew he should find some way to stop Mewtwo's relentless attacks. After all, Darkrai and Giratina still didn't deserve death. Yet, he could only watch in silence, unable to move or act. There were several methods by which the Stygian Stone could be awakened. But there was only one way it could be awakened this quickly, with this much intensity.

Lugia realized Mewtwo was in love with Ash, and that love awakened the stone. That love is what gave him such power, that his attacks were causing Giratina and Darkrai to cry out in pain.

Giratina concluded that there was no way they could combat Mewtwo in this state. The only option at this time was to make a hasty retreat. Giratina quickly opened a portal to the Distortion World. The two fled, along with the other ghost and dark type Pokemon, the portal closing too quickly behind them for Mewtwo to follow.

All at once, the stone's power seemed to wear off, at least for the time being. The aura faded from Mewtwo's form, which suddenly became very limp as he had expended much energy. He fell to the ground but sat up, clearly in a haze and unaware of what just happened.

Mewtwo spoke slowly.

"Giratina and Darkrai... They are all gone. What happened? I cannot remember."

Lugia spoke quietly, unsure of how to explain.

"You awakened the stone's powers and flew into a rage. It was incredible... their attacks didn't even touch you. Yet yours cut through them like paper. It seems one ability of the stone is to reverse match-ups. That explains how you were able to wound them."

"I see... How was the stone awakened?"

Lugia froze for a moment. He couldn't possibly tell him that his love was the cause. Not now, at least.

"The massive outpouring of psychic energy must have done it."

"Is that so...?"

Mewtwo stared off in thought, though clearly haunted.

"Back where I belong!" exclaimed Oriasis happily, as he floated down next to Arceus. The psychic Pokemon awoke and looked at the gate.

"Greetings, my son!"

"Hello, father!" answered Oriasis affectionately.

Arceus smiled and turned to the others.

"Hello Ash, Cresselia, Mew. To what do I owe this pleasure?"

"Um Arceus... in case you haven't noticed... Giratina and Darkrai are attempting to take over the world! And thousands of living things have been killed!" Cresselia exclaimed in disbelief.

Arceus blinked.

"Giratina and Darkrai would never betray me! As for the deaths, war is part of life!" Arceus explained dolefully.

Cresselia glared.

"NOT when its by our hands its NOT!"

Arceus glared.

"Cresselia hold your tongue! Giratina and Darkrai are my children and they would never disobey me!"

"I WILL NOT!" Cresselia roared.

"Forgive me for speaking plainly father, but I MUST. Thousand of beings have been killed due to their despicable actions and as we speak Mewtwo, Lugia, Ash's friends and their Pokemon are locked in a fight with Giratina and Darkrai at the entrance to the hall of origin!

"WHAT!" Ash asked.

"They're actually battling!?"

Cresselia nodded.

"I'm sorry Ash that I didn't tell you. I didn't want you to worry."

Ash stared at Cresselia and then turned.

"I have to get there!" he screamed back.

The rest quickly followed, including Arceus.

On arrival, Ash could see Mewtwo looking exhausted on the ground. His friends looked safe and Ash was grateful, but all that filled him was a desperate worry for the being he loved.

"Mewtwo!" he cried, tears flying from his eyes as he rushed over to him, and embraced him tightly and cried.

Mewtwo welcomed Ash's emotional embrace, and a wave of relief washed over him. Though, he still blamed himself for allowing Ash's soul to be captured in the first place, it made him happy beyond measure to see that he was now safe. The effort that went into speaking was too much at the moment, so Mewtwo simply transmitted his messages to Ash's mind.

Ash... It is good to see you were able to escape. I... cannot express the depth of my guilt for allowing you to come under harm. I swore to protect you and I failed... I am sorry.

Mewtwo briefly considered asking the human's forgiveness, but he honestly didn't feel he deserved such a thing. He felt that he'd failed Ash in the worst possible manner. He finally spoke aloud.

"Giratina and Darkrai have been momentarily warded off... But they will no doubt be back. Likely with reinforcements! We still do not know with certainty who is and is not supporting them. It is all the more imperative that we report to Arceus as quickly as possible."

Mewtwo's apology hit him. Hard. He felt guilty about not being able to protect him!? It wasn't his fault!

"Oh no, Mewtwo! Please don't blame yourself! You did everything you could have to protect me! And you succeeded in defeating Giratina and Darkrai! I am so, so grateful!" he said happily, stroking the back of his head.

Ash then rested his forehead against Mewtwo's and let his tears touch the other's face.

"I was so, so worried. I don't know what I would ever do if I lost you!" he whispered lovingly, his lips touching the side of his face as he spoke.

Mewtwo was at a near-loss for words. He was astounded that Ash forgave him so easily.

"Perhaps... It seems illogical, though I cannot deny feeling responsible for what happened... regardless of my ability to stop it. And I-" Mewtwo had a more difficult time saying this than he thought he would

"I am unsure of what I would do if I lost you, Ash." Mewtwo closed his eyes and used their link to send feelings of comfort and warmth, attempting to soothe Ash.

Ash's heart when into overload and he could not stop himself from leaning forward and placing his lips on Mewtwo's. Mewtwo went rigid, completely stunned at his actions. Ash's arms circled him and pulled him closer, pressing his lips a little more firmly against him. Mewtwo didn't respond, and feeling gutted, Ash drew back and looked at Mewtwo's fearful expression.

"I am sorry. Forgive me. I-I misinterpreted!"

He stood and backed away. Dawn, Brock and Pikachu and the other Pokémon were looking at them with eyes like that of a deer caught in headlights! Lugia wore a knowing, yet sympathetic expression.

It was Dawn who broke the awkward silence.

"Ash... Y-You're body!" she said awkwardly as she pointed to his physical form laying a few meters or so away.

Ash nodded.

"Yeah!" he confirmed quietly, as he walked over to his form and rejoined his body.

Eyelids fluttered, and he woke to Brock, Dawn and Pikachu holding him up.

He gave a shaky smile.

"Hi guys!" he said in attempted cheer, desperately trying to ignore the humiliation that was threatening to drown him!

"Oh Ash!" Dawn cried as she threw her arms around him.

Brock and Pikachu embraced him tightly as well.

"Glad to be back!" Ash said, managing a sincere smile this time at his friend's affection.

Lugia was watching them with a pleased smile and Mewtwo... Mewtwo could not help but stare at Ash like he had never seen him before! Cresselia, Mew and Arceus walked up to the group, slightly awkwardly, after witnessing such an intimate exchange.

"I am sorry, Ash" said Arceus in regret.

"I should have believed my children and looked into what they suggested about Giratina and Darkrai. I feel so guilty, and have been a fool! Giratina and Darkrai will be punished for their crimes! And I will make sure nothing like this ever happens again! Thank you for saving us once again".

Ash nodded and smiled, finding it in his heart to forgive Arceus.

After everyone thanked each other, and reassured one another that the future would be a brighter one and bidding each other farewell, the humans returned their Pokémon to their pokeballs, and Arceus, Mew and Cresselia vanished.

Ash walked straight past Mewtwo, too ashamed and heartbroken to face him. He felt guilty, but he just couldn't handle this.

Lugia tried to say something to Ash, but Ash told him he couldn't deal with this right now, and asked him to take himself, Pikachu, Brock and Dawn back to Pallet.

Back to his mum, Gary and Misty...

Mewtwo froze. He couldn't believe what just happened. Ash just kissed him. Twice. He wasn't sure why he found that so startling. They loved one another, so it was perfectly logical that it would happen sooner or later. Terror bolted through his form when he realized how his reaction must have looked to Ash. By Arceus. Arceus DAMNIT! He had just broken Ash's heart. And he wasn't sure he could fix it. Ash was so far off. The only misinterpretation on Ash's part was that he misinterpreted anything in the first place. In reality, his kiss made Mewtwo happy, wonderfully, incredibly so. He felt like he had found something he had always been missing, looking for. And now Ash, the love of his life... was walking away. Walking away broken-hearted. He tried to say something, but nothing came out.

Ash had gone.

Upon arriving home, the first thing Ash did after he and his friends greeted his mum, and their accommodations were set up, was run into his mother's arms and...cry.

"Ash! Baby, what's wrong!?" Delia asked in alarm, wrapping her arms around her son and holding him.

Ash whimpered.

"I don't want to talk about it right now Mum! Just please hold me!".

Delia looked at him, deeply concerned and pained for her only child. She embraced him and rocked him gently.

"I'm here Ash! I'm here!"

A week later found Ash still not wanting to talk about it. He had only very briefly discussed it with four people; Misty, Brock, Gary and Pikachu. He spoke with Misty over the phone. She understood that Ash had fallen in love with Mewtwo and that he unfortunately did not return his feelings. She had offered words of comfort and understanding, and told him she would always love him no matter what, and that he would one day find the person he was mean't to be with. Brock gave the same comfort and similar advice.

I'm so very proud of you, Ash! his mother's, Gary's, Brock's, Pikachu's and Misty's words echoed in his head. These words were a comfort to him, always.

Gary, having been home to visit his grandfather, had sat on the couch and comforted Ash as he told his story. He found it a bit strange that Ash had fallen in love with a Pokemon, but didn't dare say anything about it, for it would upset his friend. He was slightly angry at the jerk for upsetting his childhood friend. In the end all he could do was comfort and reassure Ash that he would be okay and life went on.

Pikachu was of course another source of comfort, and cuddled up to him whenever he was sad. The electric mouse did whatever he could to engage Ash in games that would make him happy, and take his mind of his heartache.

Ash sat by the local stream in Pallet and skipped a stone through the water. Pikachu was back at home, napping, and he was alone. He felt a bit better, but it still hurt a great deal. He knew that he couldn't have everything and that there were other fish in the sea and life went on and all that life wisdom stuff. But darn it hurt! And, he could not deny it!

I love him with my entire being! Ash thought sadly, and he relapsed suddenly, and screamed into the air, in agony. "Damn it all!" Ash yelled in fury, as he punched his fist into the grass beside him. He then put his head in his hands and began to sob uncontrollably.

Since the incident, Mewtwo had gone back into hiding, without telling anyone, not even Lugia, where he was going. He felt that the only way he could atone for what had transpired was solitude. This way, he could not hurt anyone else. He wanted to find Ash and explain... He wanted that more than almost anything else. At the same time... Mewtwo did not think he could bear to look into Ash's face knowing how much pain he had caused him, and considering the scope of his failure to protect him. Ash's heartbroken face and shock filled Mewtwo's mind at all hours of the day, and night provided no relief. He knew nothing of peace... A fitting punishment, he thought. He wanted to find Ash and explain the reality of the situation. Almost more than anything. But more than anything... He wanted to Ash back in his arms.

Ash still sat crying silently. Mewtwo now forever knew he had feelings for him, but he rejected his kiss, and that meant that he DEFINITELY didn't love him back! Sure, Ash knew that he was his friend, and had protected him well, but that was probably because he felt a sense of obligation because Ash had saved him; twice, and he was just being honourable towards him.

Ash should have known what to expect, and stuck to the promise he had made himself that day to just be Mewtwo's friend. He had been such an idiot! As usual! Mewtwo had even said he couldn't ever LOVE him himself when he had said he could never feel real compassion for humans! Ash shook his head.

"What a moron I've been!" he sad to himself angrily, still crying into his knees at Pallet Town creek.

Mewtwo agonized over whether to attempt to make contact with Ash... And then realized that by this point, any attempt he did make would likely be fruitless. At first he considered it might just be the physical distance between them, but then he realized it was the emotional distance instead. No matter which distance... It was clear that it was weakening the link the two shared. He was not sure it was strong enough to carry his thoughts and feelings abroad to Ash anymore.

Naturally, Mewtwo blamed himself for this too.

"It would seem I may be entirely without a means of communication with him... Now I am truly in solitude. Perhaps it was meant to be... I was never deserving of his companionship in the first place. Not after all that I have done..." He sat perfectly still, tears rolling silently down his face.

Days past, and Ash was slowly getting better day by day, though the agony that he pushed to the back of his mind was still there. He could no longer feel Mewtwo's existence on this planet, which meant the mind link had been severed. Ash knew that Mewtwo could come and find him wherever he was if he wished. But why would he? In a few more days, Ash, Pikachu, Dawn and Brock would go back to Sinnoh and Ash would journey to get his two remaining badges and then enter the Sinnoh league.

Misty had finally told him that she loved him more than a friend one day, and Ash was trying to decide whether or not he should accept her offer of going steady. He had ALWAYS loved her. but in what way? Could he love her how she wanted him too?

Ash sighed. It was so difficult. But he cared for Mist. And it would do no harm to give her a chance. Plus he missed his dear friends' company. She had told him that she would leave the Cerulean Gym and travel with him again if he chose to date her. She also said that she would support whatever decision he made, and told him she'd always be there regardless. Yes, it wouldn't hurt to give it a go.

Mewtwo had stopped counting the days that went by. The link was severed, and that was all that mattered to him. He could no longer feel Ash's presence at all, nor did he have any chance of sending comfort or messages to him. And that... That was something he couldn't live with. He weighed out his options in his mind. He could stay where he was in relative safety, but risk never seeing Ash again and never reconciling with him. Or, he could go find him.

Ash's home was far away. Very far away. But he knew that's where Ash would be. It was a risk. It was a near certainty that he would be seen. At this point, though, he felt he would be damned if he didn't try.

"Ash... Though you cannot hear me, I am coming for you."

Ash sat at Pallet Creek again, reflecting on...LIFE. This had become one of his favourite places. It was the place that he and Gary use to visit when they were young. It was so beautiful.

The sunlight glistened off the stream brightly, and Goldeen and Magikarp leapt out of the water happily. Ash smiled, He had always loved to watch the Pokémon. So content. So happy and not a care in the world.

.Ash laid back on the grass, smiling blissfully. The afternoon sun warmed his body pleasantly, and a light breeze caressed his face. It was so relaxing! So peaceful...

Mewtwo considered how he could get there. He could fly, but that would be slow and would guarantee he would be seen. The amount of energy required to maintain flight would not be productive enough to justify it, anyway. The only other obvious method of transportation would be to teleport. Even then, there were a few ways he could go about it. He could teleport many times over shorter distances, which would allow him to spread out his energy reserves just a bit. Or... Even though he was reluctant to... He could blow most of his energy in one go and simply go the full distance in one teleport.

Mewtwo reasoned that the more time passed, the worse the situation would become, and the greater the chance of Ash moving from his current location. It was obvious what he had to do. Mewtwo walked outside of his hiding location, an unnamed cave.

He focused his great mind and vanished, reappearing almost instantaneously in Pallet Town. He checked his surroundings, looking towards the creek, where he spotted Ash. He hesitated a moment, then approached gently. He spoke barely audibly, uncertainty plainly audible in his voice.

"Ash..."

Ash jumped, hearing a voice that haunted him in is dreams. He knew that voice! He turned and saw that another one of his day dreams had taken form. Ash sighed and looked away. He had fallen asleep!

"You're not real...!" he murmured quietly, as he looked at the never-ending blue sky.

Those words cut Mewtwo deeply, and he felt a wave of pain in his chest. He stepped closer.

"Ash... After our last encounter, I imagine you may not be entirely pleased to see me. And... I deserve that, for causing this misunderstanding. We must speak. Things are not as they seem!" Mewtwo sounded truly desperate.

Ash laughed. A slightly sarcastic laugh.

"I will not talk with an illusion!" he answered bitterly. He had already been so stupid enough before. He wouldn't keep giving into his hopes and fantasies. It was over and he had accepted it.

Mewtwo found himself suddenly annoyed. He quickly, though gently, walked right up to Ash and put a hand firmly on his shoulder, staring deeply into Ash's eyes.

"What need could I possibly have for false images?"

"No!" Ash answered immediately in response, wrenching his arm away.

"It is MY need for false images! And I don't want you inside my head anymore! I have tried to forget you! I WISH TO FORGET YOU! WHY WON'T YOU LEAVE ME ALONE AND GET OUT OF MY HEAD!?" Ash screamed in agony, still believing this to be a dream or fantasy of some sort. Like usual!

"Regardless of whether you believe I am real or not, I will tell you what you must be told. Our mental link has been severed. Appearing before you is currently my only means of communication with you. As I said before... I am unsure of what I would do were I ever to lose you. In any sense of the phrase. I could not sit idly by without attempting to rectify the situation. I-" Mewtwo stumbled, the energy drain of teleporting the whole way in one go clearly hitting him hard.

"I must... Make things right. You did not misinterpret anything at all. While it is true I did not respond in a timely fashion... It was not due to contrary emotion. The opposite... In fact. I simply was not sure how to react... Ash. The truth of the matter is that... I love you, as well."

Mewtwo could not keep himself upright any longer, and fell to the ground, drifting somewhere between consciousness and unconsciousness.

Ash watched the apparition spout exactly what he wanted to hear. How many times had he imagined such scenarios in his head? How many nights had he dreamed of Mewtwo's voice? His touch? How many times had he thought he glimpsed Mewtwo in the corner of his eyes? And now, still, after all these weeks, the apparition had finally taken hold! He had literally gone mad!

But then, the apparition fainted, and with a cry, Ash realised that this was indeed no apparition, at all, but the real thing!

Ash stood in the doorway of one of the spare rooms of his house, watching the steady rise and fall of Mewtwo's chest as he slept. His face was peaceful, and he seemed so relaxed in his slumber. Ash had checked him over as soon as he had called out Bulbasaur and Grotle to help him carry Mewtwo back to his house. His mum had asked him who he was, and Ash had told her he was a good friend. He was going to be okay to Ash's major relief! He was simply exhausted and needed rest!

Even though Ash now understood what had likely occurred weeks ago and that it was a misunderstanding, the struggles of the past few weeks and his chaotic emotions caused in him a slight detachment he couldn't help. He was upset and tired. Nevertheless, he pulled up a chair, and placed it by Mewtwo's side, before sitting and picking up a novel. Waiting...

Mewtwo's eyes fluttered open slowly. He tilted his head to get a look at his surroundings and saw Ash sitting there by his side. His expression softened and the first true rush of relief in weeks was filling his heart. This could only mean, he reasoned, that Ash believed him. And all at once, he felt guilty for causing Ash worry once more.

Perhaps I should not have teleported myself the full distance instantaneously when I was deprived of rest... he thought. There were many things he wanted to say, yet he did not know where to begin. So he opted for simplicity.

"Ash..." was all he could muster at the moment.'

Ash locked eyes with Mewtwo's the minute he started speaking, and Ash gave him a small smile. He was truly glad and relieved that he was awake, and that he was going to be okay! But he was still nervous and hurt from all the events that had occurred.

Ash looked at him, and at the sound of his name he exhaled softly.

"Yes?" he inquired softly.

Mewtwo's eyes shone with unshed tears. All his grief and guilt was plain to see.

"Ash... I failed you. I swore I would protect you. I caused you pain when pain is the thing I least wish you to experience. I do not deserve your companionship, nor your forgiveness. Yet... I find myself hoping you might grant me forgiveness. And should you find me unworthy... You need only say."

Ash stared for a moment, before his eyes watered and his lip trembled.

Suddenly, he launched himself at Mewtwo and embraced him like he would disappear at any moment.

"Oh no Mewtwo! You're the best thing that ever happened to me! It is me who should be sorry. I-I was just- I thought-!"

Ash shook his head.

"It doesn't matter anymore! You're here now! And I am NEVER letting you go! Mewtwo, I love you so much!" Ash cried with a wave of loving affection, trailing his hands up and down his back.

Though he was still weak, there was no trace of hesitation this time from Mewtwo. He wrapped his arms tightly around Ash, shedding tears of his own.

"Likewise... I do not know where I would be... Or what kind of being I would be... Were it not for you. I can objectively say you are the best thing to happen in my life, as well... I love you, Ash!"

Any trace of doubt and fear was momentarily driven from Mewtwo's mind, replaced by happiness and overwhelming love and affection.

Ash pulled back slightly and gave a wide smile. "Mewtwo...May I kiss you?" Ash breathed gently, his eyes shining with love.

Mewtwo said nothing, but simply smiled, closed his eyes, and nodded.

Ash pushed Mewtwo gently down onto his back, and hovered over him, before gently leaning down and capturing surprisingly soft lips with his own. A fire burnt within his belly, and it seemed to spread throughout his entire body. Ash moaned at the incredible feeling. He had felt nothing so POWERFUL before, and he knew that this connection he had with the one he loved, he would never ever want to forsake. His hands trailed down Mewtwo's shoulders, and clenched and unclenched them gently.

Mewtwo was pliant under Ash's touch, curious and intrigued. He found it pleasurable and made contented sounds that were almost like a purr.

They then slowly and lovingly made love to each other, exploring each other's body, and savouring the emotions, and gasps that their touch drew from each other. They made up for all the unsaid words, and all the time that they had lost, and they had never felt so ALIVE!

Ash lay beside Mewtwo, contentedly trailing his fingers over Mewtwo's cheek. He had never felt so content in his entire life! It was such a blissful feeling! He wondered what would happen now. he had to know!

"Mewtwo?" Ash inquired softly, turning his head so they met each other's gaze.

"What does the future hold for us now?" he asked softly.

Mewtwo felt the same blissful feeling that Ash did. He briefly pondered the nature of their relationship at this point, but decided that at the moment, that was not a major priority.

"If there is one thing I have learned, Ash... It is that the future can change. The future can hold anything. In short... Our future will hold whatever it is that we wish."

Ash smiled. He really, truly believed Mewtwo's words! He was certain that they could look forward to a bright happy future, full with infinite possibilities and joy, together!

And they did!
