The servants could always tell when Gwendal von Walde was in a sour mood. His displeasure resounded in every footfall, and many believed that straying within a two foot radius of his narrowed eyes would result in instantaneous death. The best thing to do today would be to stay out of his way, and—
"Gweeeeen!"
Greta barreled down the hallway, skidding to a halt in front of Gwendal's feet and giggling as she held something behind her back.
Gwendal raised an eyebrow. "What is it, Greta?"
"I finished it!" With a glowing grin, she whipped out her surprise present and thrust it towards Gwendal. Before him lay a knitted ski cap, completely with a smiling kitty's face on the front. Two calico cat eats sat on top of the hat, and a long tail protruded from the back.
Gwendal stared at it for a few moments, his left eye twitching every so often, as the maids stood hidden behind a door and held a collective breath. Finally, he took it and placed it on his head. "Cute." Then without another word, he picked up Greta, placed her on his shoulder, and walked down the hall, cat tail swishing behind him.
Though she was only a human child, Greta had more power at Blood Pledge Castle than most.
