The Ride

Yamato's point of view

The scene just kept replaying in my mind. Over and over again and again it was never going to go away. I remember seeing his face as Gota and his guys separate me from him. I hear him screaming my name. I hear the others screaming and just trying to get away, like Ren and me were.

He saved me. He had grabbed Gota and pulled him away and they all just started to punch him. It felt as slow motion as Gota threw Ren at the stand. The stand that caused him to be this way.

Not one of us could move as we saw it all fall down. It wasn't until we heard the last pipe drop did we start moving again. We all ran for his pile. We all worked fast as we removed the pile, screaming his name the whole while.

He was unconscious when we got to him. He was so bruised up, so I gently put his head on my lap, trying to make it more comfortable for him. I faintly recall someone saying they'd call an ambulance but I don't remember clearly.

As we heard the ambulance and knew it was close, I quickly grabbed Ren's hand not wanting to let go. Afraid that if I did they would take him away from me. I think Ichi convinced the workers to let all of us ride with him.

I was shaken from my thoughts by Kura, "It will be alright." It wasn't a reassurance to us no it was more to himself. Kura had known Ren for a long time and most likely felt that if he said this it would calm us down and Ren would just wake up. It makes me angry for some reason when I think of how long he's known Ren.

I have been holding Ren's hand tight the whole ride and when we arrived at the hospital I ran beside them with his hand in mine for what felt like forever, when a hand stopped me.

"Let him go son, he will be fine he's in capable hands." That whats-his-face doctor that Yankumi likes said stopping me from going any further.

And so slowly I let go of his hand as he was wheeled off to the operation room. I felt guilty, I'm leaving him on his own again.
